Title: I bought a new car...UPDATE PICTURES
Post by: anlauto on October 01, 2018, 07:52:28 AM
So yesterday I bought another project car, this one I'll likely sell to someone willing to pay me to restore it.....

It's a 1970 Plymouth AAR Cuda....

Imagine my excitement when I heard of a black AAR just sitting in a barn less then 2 hours away from my house....That's what sparked the "What's a black AAR worth" discussion awhile back....

So after contacting the owner, I was quick to find out, the car was originally FE5 red, black interior....That was November 2017....besides, the guys asking price was pretty insane, or at least I thought so....

Fast forward to last week....I was thinking about my work load and how after finishing a bunch of cars this year I thought I would try my hand at flipping .... my intention was to buy a project car and sell it to someone wanting me to restore it for them...two birds, one cuda ....double dipping, whatever you want to call it...Make a few bucks on the flip, then make a few more restoring it....

The Details:
1970 Plymouth AAR Cuda
340+6 Auto
3:55 Sure Grip

The factory installed options:
Black Vinyl Top
Drivers only painted racing mirror
AM radio
Bench Seat

The Good
Probably the most solid car I've ever owned....No major panel replacement required (with that said, might be a different story after stripping it down)
Complete car
Beautiful original BROADCAST SHEET
Number's Matching 727 Transmission
Original distributor, heads, valve train, rad, intake, carbs, air cleaner, spare tire,
Original "trans am" tag
Bench seat car.....unique feature on an AAR

The Bad
So far missing fender tag....HOWEVER....could be in the car somewhere, there's a ton of junk in the trunk/glove box etc...Current owner is a GM guy and really didn't know much about it....with the BCS, I'm not too worried about the tag.
Missing the TA block altogether...
Bench seat car....most people hate them
Hasn't run it ten years
Bench seat and steering column are missing
Aftermarket 15X7's not original 390's

That's all I can think of....I only looked at it yesterday for about 45mins, paid the guy and left...I hope to pick it up tomorrow and have a closer look, or at least empty the junk out of the trunk.

Freaking great car.  And only 2 hours from you!      :veryexcited:  Nice find man.  Having the build sheet makes not having the fender tag no big deal.  The sheet is where all the good info is at.   :checkmail:  Bet that really felt good knowing it has a build sheet.
Title: Re: I bought a new car !
Post by: anlauto on October 01, 2018, 04:42:28 PM
I feel the same about the tag....When he said it had a BCS....it sealed the deal for sure !

I know it's early, but does anybody want to take a stab at what it's worth or what I could possibly ask for it in USD ?

"It's your car build it the way you want!" Just think Alan, you could personalize it, you know throw the dash away, install a new Charger dash to match the "Hemi" under the hood, big radials. That sort of thing.

It was actually South, about an hour and a half away in a small town in the Niagara Region, but it spent time in my Hometown of Burlington. I remember seeing the car in the late 80's early 90's near a friends house.

Title: Re: I bought a new car...UPDATE PICTURES

Today I cleaned out the trunk to find 100% of the original trunk floor with no patch work....there is minor rust and I'm sure a lot of pin holes once blasted, but at this point I don't think a full replacement is required. This is the first car I've restored that had whole trunk extensions in it :bigthumb:, again, I think both can be saved. The quarters must have had patches at the bottom, but until they're stripped, it's anybody's guess as to how bad....again, no full panel replacement in my opinion....

Moving forward...I pulled the seats out, the guy had painted the interior black, glued on some heavy insulation and then a nice velvet carpet...

Once removed :pullinghair: it releveled 100% of the original floors, again no ugly patches, no major Fred Flintstone stuff. I will be able to save all of it with no full panel replacement....

It's a Canadian ordered car so no funny export stuff going on :dunno:

I have no AAR "values" in mind as I am not an AAR expert in any way.  Would blasting it to see whats under the paint help others chime in for value?  Im sure more people could chime in.  Come on guys.

One thing for sure is the fact all e-bodies are getting expensive on  :ebay:  Even 72-74's are selling for big bucks or at least are being listed for big bucks over the past year.

@Aar1064 (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/aar1064_59) @AAR#2 (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/aar2_301) @AAR EF8 (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/aar-ef8_452) @AARtransam (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/aartransam_608) @AARuFAST (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/aarufast_737) @Cudagirl3406 (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/cudagirl3406_869)  You copy?

Who else ones an AAR and could chime in?

I believe $40k would be fair value - especially when you consider the solid metal.  Having the original trunk pan in place provides an overall indication that the metal is solid on the overall car.

Original metal is nice but that trunk floor isn't that clean, once blasted I suspect it will be getting replaced.... Missing engine & trans, Auto on the column, bench seat, no Rally dash, no rubber bumpers, single mirror.... Needs a complete resto & will always be a low option car missing its drivetrain.....  30K is all the money & then some IMO..

How much difference would have a non-matching number TA block in the car(or with the car) ?

Would it increase the resale value or only the resale potential ?

How much should I invest in a TA block and will I see return on that investment ?

Numbers Matching = full value

Non numbers,  but real T/A block = 5% to 8% less than #'s

Non numbers = 10% to 15% less than #'s

The tough part is non-numbers trans and motor.

But I think if you got a period trans and TA motor you would prob take like a 10-15% hit which is not bad. The downside is how much will you have to pay for both the motor and trans and would it be worth it?

Here is a trans for an AAR:
https://orlando.craigslist.org/pts/d/mopar-speed-parts-hi/6702466964.html 2k not rebuilt (not super necessary)

Unfortunately you would have to find a TA motor since there are none out there. This could be a cost prohibitive endeavor.

Is it ? What does everybody think about it's current value...

DO you really want o know ??

This is how I would look at it -
Top $ for a red AAR Auto column shift auto with a bench seat - $70k

Now subtract all that is needed
Paint body & blasting $30 k
new Interior $5 - 6K
T/A block heads & valve train properly built $12 k
Correct HD 727 rebuilt $2k
New Exhaust $1k
Rebuild suspension $500-700
Rebuild diff $50-2k
New Brakes - Pads shoes spring & hoses $170 , add new rotors brgs drums park cables  $400-600
New wiring - $600
Detail everything , lots of hours & paint

Missing parts
Bench seat $200 -400 if you can find one
Correct Rad if not there + shroud $400 +
JacK + inflator bottle $300
Exhaust Manifolds - $600
Good Year Tires $1400
So Approx 50k + missing parts to restore it
I figure $10 - 12k as it sits to break even
This is if you do a lot of the Labor yourself , if you are paying Alans time to do the work well you get the point
Title: Re: I bought a new car...UPDATE PICTURES

My question is really what's it worth as it sits.... :dunno:

I think for someone to buy it, and have me restore it for them will easily cost $100K USD plus....
In my opinion a realistic resale value after a full ground up restoration, done to my standards would be in the $85K USD range.

So obviously it's much cheaper to go by a done car, and take a gamble on what you're buying. If people haven't figured that out yet, then they must be pretty new to the hobby.

If someone wants to buy it and restore it themselves, they will pay a little more up front, but save the $25K labour, so they might be a little better off, but still in to deep.  Buying and restoring cars is not a profit making business anymore.

An ARR with a color change, assuming no tag, unknown body condition under the paint, missing expensive parts to make it right, missing column shift, missing bench that's in unknown mechanical condition too (looks like he hasn't ran it for a long while)?  I would say $18k.  If I bought it I would throw $10k into it to get it safe, running, driving, stopping, don't forget you need to find an install seats and a column too. Then just drive it just like it is and not worry about the high dollar resto and anxiety every time you take it out or someone comes near it so you just leave it in the garage. Drive the tires off it and enjoy it!

Just a heads up.....I'll buy EVERY single AAR Cuda project you guys can supply for $10K-$18K USD.... :slapme5:

If you keep asking for peoples opinions on the value, then you should respect what they say even if you don't like it.  Otherwise don't ask.  IMO I would not pay more than $20k for that car the way it sits because I know the minimum that has to be done to it, and there are still many unknowns about the car. Someone else who really wants an AAR or who doesn't understand the cost and effort, including just finding a TA block w/ heads and manifolds that will most likely need rebuilt is $10-15k, might think its worth more.

IMO if you restore that car to perfection, you will be $40k upside down to the current market value of a column shift-bench AAR.

I do respect your opinion and the opinions of all the members on this board, that's why I politely asked you to point me in the direction of any AAR Cuda project that is for sale for under $18K USD....

When I give MY opinion on a value of any car, it's not necessarily what "I'm willing to pay" , it's based more on the current market and the asking prices and sale prices of comparable cars. For example....Your 1970 Cuda with a modern Hemi in it....I wouldn't pay more than $20K for it....but that wouldn't be an honest opinion of the current value of the car :alan2cents:

T.A.engines/blocks are out there. Just easier to find 426 Hemi stuff lol. The T.A.blocks/engines aren't cheap either but I believe you would recoup any money invested into proper non matching T.A.driveline components. And hey never know the numbers engine could surface one day !

I'd post it up for sale with you restoring it and see who comes out of the woodwork. Like that member "Uncleal" at the top, this is his first ever post. Maybe this car provoked him to post and is interested?

303's car is perfect in my eyes, just proof that different people like different things. I think that works well in your favor with this project, you have a blank canvas ready for anything and everything. If I had the money, I'd love to have a real AAR but without the concern of having to keep it 100% stock and original. Could check out some of those pro-touring forums, might be a prime candidate for this car.

So you have $10-12 from @Chryco Psycho (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/chryco-psycho_4), $18k from me, $25-30k from @Cuda Cody (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/cuda-cody_1), $30k from @1 Wild R/T (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/1-wild-rt_320), $40k from @kdcarman (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/kdcarman_184). If you do the math, maybe throw out the high of $40 and low of $10, and split the $18-30k range you have about a mid $20k car as it sits from the opinions you asked.

I think the value is somewhere between $26k and $30k. It's a pretty complete car and it has pretty nice metal. Sure you will be upside down in today's values but two things come to mind. One, most of us love the cars and we also want to watch them every step of the resto (whether we do them ourselves or contract them), second values generally go up so upside down today is just fine a year or two down the road.
I doubt I would ever buy a done car because for one thing I want to KNOW that those serial #'s punched in the metal were on that car on that metal from when Chrysler put them there. I have also seen some pretty nice paint jobs over bodywork not done as I want it done.

I have restored too many cars & know the time & costs to build them all too well , I would not go upside down on a Bench seat Column Auto car with non numbers engine & trans  , limited market of buyers & not in love with the combo .
If I would buy the car I would either  build a 408 stroker with trick flow heads or drop in a Hellcrate with a manual trans leave it black , add elastomeric bumpers & drive the hellcrate out of it !!  :wrenching:  :burnout:

Perfect candidate for a Hellcrate with a 5 speed.  It may even be worth more in the end than a restored bench column AAR, for sure would be the first AAR Hellcat that I've seen.

Scrolling through the thread I was thinking the same.  It would be tough to do all of the work and sell for a profit.  But it is an AAR and they are very popular.  Even this one is somebody's dream car.

Not my cup of tea but would be interesting to advertise it say on Ebat and see what the window auction would bring. I would rather spend 20k more or so on another AAR and get all the right stuff that I've seen advertised before.  I've been looking for other Mopars to buy and a lot of whats out there for cheap is basically NON #'s, ALL THE CORRECT PARTS ARE GONE, repop fender tag, no BCS. The list goes on. You know what people do to these cars over the years. Cars are basically a mess. About the only originality to be found is the dash VIN. I personally would buy a clone (that's what I'm leaning towards) or close to it, and beat the pisss out of it. I'm really disappointed to think buyers are so stupid to buy a car that was, for big money. Shit, for 65k I should buy a modern Challenger.

There is no way to tell exact production figures for bench seat cars. The percentages are inaccurate just as it is for the color charts people post from time to time.

As far as how many bench seat AAR's are on the registry. Here is that number as of 10/7/18  its a little over 100... There are 2 cars that have had fake tags made for them and the color and options were changed but they both fall into groups of similar optioned cars with bench seats so im not counting them until I can confirm what was changed. other wise it would be 102.
Title: Re: I bought a new car...UPDATE PICTURES
Post by: 6bblgt on October 07, 2018, 09:32:07 PM
:iagree: but the info is not without merit - if you understand what the information is  :brainiac:

the Option & Accessory Reports (that I have copies of) were created using data from domestic shipped vehicles as of an UNKNOWN date to demonstrate popularity of OPTIONS as a percentage of "SHIPPED" vehicles

they take into account 16,710 'cuda hardtops (BS23) all "shipped domestically" (~88% of total production)
the installation rate of of a H4__ bench seat in a BS23 (at that point in time) was 7.2% or approximately 1,203 cars

these ~1,203 'cudas would be all automatics, which total (by the same math) ~7,771 cars
so, for the 1970 'cuda hardtops with an automatic transmission more than 15% had a bench seat (that's > 1 out of 6 automatic 'cuda hardtops)

1970 'cuda hardtop (BS23) 18,888 total built (Y05, Y07 & Y09)
IN A PERFECT WORLD that 7.2% would represent 1,360 cars which I'm sure is closer to reality than the "1,203"
Title: Re: I bought a new car...UPDATE PICTURES
Post by: 6bblgt on October 07, 2018, 10:06:26 PM
I have fender tag info for 32 AARs OPTIONED with a bench seat out of 516 (6.2%)
I have fender tag info for 32 AARs OPTIONED with a bench seat out of 291 w/automatic transmission (11.0%)

not too far off of the "O&A Report" percentages considering the small number of samples & the AAR "subset" isn't quite the "average/typical 'cuda"

curious what Jeff's
@Transamcuda.com (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/transamcuda-com_2275) numbers would show?

he has fender tag info for 100 AARs OPTIONED with a bench seat out of ???? (?.?%)

Well Jeff says 102 in his registry of 1700.....so that's also 6%....the law of averages at work... :bigthumb:

I'm no idiot...I know bench seat column is a bad thing....I know from a owner stand point that nobody wants one, everybody wants a four speed or at least buckets and a console, but you can't deny the rarity and uniqueness of this option especially in an AAR. Anywhere you take this car you'll get more attention, on lookers, people in disbelieve, comments both good and bad, FAR MORE then a four speed or console auto car....

I've talked to MOPAR guys this past week that didn't know they existed....or never seen one in person....I bet if you've seen an EBody with a bench seat, whether you liked it or not, you probably remember it, when, and where you were....

If someone buys it from me, or pays me to restore it...I hope they choose to restore it correctly, if they don't, no big deal....it's their car.

Title: Re: I bought a new car...UPDATE PICTURES

IMO
There is a market for all AAR's regardless of options.  The fact only 2724 we produced means there is limited supply.  Options, documentation, etc. affect market price.

I owned a bench, column AAR, F8 for 13 years.  And Alan is right, the bench/column was quite the conversation starter at car nights.

Not the ideal options or color.  From my perspective I drove an AAR for 13 years at a discount.  Clearly the car did not have the same value as a TX9, white interior, 4 speed AAR.

After 13 years it took one month to sell the car.  Of course I priced the car accordingly considering the options and color.

There is a market for this car, I hope it does get restored back to its original condition.

Congratulations on that acquisition! Sounds like a cool car to me, so few AAR's it should go as close to original as possible, kiss of death or not. :)

There was an AAR I tried to acquire for several years in San Jose, it was either FY4 or BL1, neither color is something I'd prefer, but for that car it would have been repainted to it's original color. I wonder if the owner ever got around to doing anything with that car. Gonna drive by there and have a look for my lunch break :)

I would set the value at $20K to $25K as the car is now.

I would go get that beach seat and column you found NOW.

The value is all in completeness.  It's tracking down the parts that is the headache.  Any part added adds value.

Also being column shift does hurt value a little, but I think it's cool.  I have a 70 Superbee Coupe V code that is a column shift.   :bigthumb:

I would go get that beach seat and column you found NOW.

The value is all in completeness.  It's tracking down the parts that is the headache.  Any part added adds value.

Also being column shift does hurt value a little, but I think it's cool.  I have a 70 Superbee Coupe V code that is a column shift.   :bigthumb:

I paid $25K USD so you're right on target.
I picked up a nice 70 Cuda bench seat today in Ashville NY ...The guy had three to choose from.

Right on!
