I wonder what happened to all these funny car bodies ? Just thinking it would make some really cool garage art hanging on a wall or ceiling if your garage/shop was big enough.
The obsolete funny cars and dragsters made awesome bracket racers in the 80's. Unfortunately that means they usually got painted. I know we had a few at our track. On a similar note I remember a local racer had rusty Demon he ran and thought he had it scienced out. Around 1982 or so he ran down to Ca. and bought a Demon body from Dick Landy, brought it back and installed his drivetrain in it. He instantly picked up a few tenths. It just goes to show there was a lot more to a package than just the engine and trans.
.

I know it's not a Mopar, but
This was a neighbors car. I was over there as much as I could, he was kind enough to let me help and a few times went with him to the races.

Don Prudhomme's The Snake funny car, the car that got me hooked on Cuda's.
There was 1/16th scale model of it at our local K-Mart in the early to mid 70's, I think I was 10 or 11 and I wanted it so bad but it was I think $30 and that was alot of money then.
My dad kept saying no because he didn't think that I could build it, it had plastic tubing fuel lines, brake lines, plug wires etc. and I had only built 1/32nd models before this.
Finally bugged my mom enough that she convinced my dad to buy it for me for christmas.
I built it by myself, wouldn't let dad help and he was very impressed that i could do it.
Even painted it exactly like the original.
Been a Cuda lover ever since, too bad my dad passed away from lung cancer (I believe it was mesothelioma from all the Asbestos used in steel shops back then, gloves, vests shields were all made with asbestos then) when I was 13 1/2 before I bought my AAR at 15 1/2 years old.
This is probably the biggest reason I have kept my AAR for this long, sometimes I think it's my guardian angel. When I was in my early 20's coming home from the bar (not hammered but shouldn't have been driving) gunned it coming off an overpass that had a left turn at the bottom and there was a dip in the road there right before the corner, was going about 90, the suspension almost bottomed out then I hit the corner with the suspension up, lost all traction and spun it 3 times before going right between 2 big ass highway light standards into the ditch, which was thankfully flat and came to a stop, sure sobered up fast after that, collected myself, drove out of the ditch, never did any damage at all to the AAR. Went to my friends house were a bunch of us were gathering after the bar, walked in and they all looked at me and said I was as white as a ghost. I probably should have died that night, but I always wonder if my dad helped, just a thought. I don't really believe in that stuff but everytime that I thought of selling it because I needed money, got married, had kids, etc. something good has always happened. My wife says its my good luck charm.
He owned a grain body/implements manufacturing/ welding /machine shop that I started working at in the summers when I was 10, I learned to run the Presses, Brakes, Lathes, everything in the shop.
He even built Briggs & Stratton mini bikes, and the fiberglass dune buggies from the 70`s.

Same here, I have great memories from Fremont drag strip. It was 3 miles as the crow flys away and many times you could hear them running especially the funny cars and dragsters. You could be right up on the starting line no big deal back then. It's all gone now.

The stance on Dick Landy's challenger on page 1 is perfection. Are there any details online as to what size rear tire he was running and how he got that stance?
:stayinlane:
Landy's car changed about every month back then. It's pretty low there. I would guess he went from SS Springs to leaf link and then probably 4 link. I have original articles back when it was new. I'll have to dig them up but that car was constantly evolving.

It was very popular back in the 60s bu the reduced wheel weight / less rotating mass rules launching these cars

I just ran across these shots. This was a local dealer Karl Gould who was into racing. This was a Hemi Cuda running SS/DA and he also had a 70 Hemi Superbird. Both of these were driven by a local guy from Dunmore PA before he became a celebrity in Drag Racing. His name was Tim " The General" Richards. He wrench many record holding Hemi cars including Top Fuel and Funny Car. He brought Joe Amato to 6 or 7 Nationals Titles in NHRA.

Must be an interesting story as to why there is a Sohc engine in there
I think Prudhomme and Shelby had some sort of a partnership, that year. The car is on display, a few miles from me, at a place called Canepa Motorsports.
I think Prudhomme drove for Ed Pink one year and they ran the Sohc motor. Pink probably wasn't getting any sleep because the time it took for cam degreeing though.

He was probably most notable as the driver of Grumpy Jenkins Pro Stock cars in the early/mid seventies. Back when they shifted real 4 speeds. When The Grump retired from driving, Dondero drove for him. That would be why you connect him to bowties...

Found this cool video of vintage 70's racing. This is from my era. In high school (class of 75) we never missed a major event at our local track / Firebird raceway. I think this track was recently added to the national historic registry or something like that. Been around here for a long time. One of the top tracks around here in the north west. https://youtu.be/Kz3EtlWpIaY
A bit more nostalgia. This is from 1972. Has a lot of cool mopar's ---I really like the funny cars from this time. https://youtu.be/8s09fT7Hu_g
Yes: I like everything from that era better than the Drag cars these days.

racing while expensive was more affordable , funny cars were not created out of 1 mold with different decals , at least to a point the technology is limited but still advancing in Drag racing unlike Nascar

I grew up with my walls covered with Mopar Super Stock , Pro Stock & funny car posters but I missed it all also , no tracks near me to see it in person , everything was in magazines so no different than looking at all of the pictures on the internet now . All my life I knew I was born to race or be a mech & now I am too old to race & I really never got there other than my Duster which was a blast driving an mid 11 second street car with heater & wipers in 86
11 second duster is awsome track not far from me ,But we did not have the super stock, and funny cars you guys had what a blast it would have been back then . Love the history of drag racing never get tied off seeing these pictures thank you :australia:
No technology back then not like now no computers .wow Just real guts and raw horse power :thankyou:
I was about 5 years behind the wave unfortunately. There were quite a few guys in town with really fast cars and a few that ended up running class after modifying their street cars continuously. It was tough to run class as we were 500 miles away from the NHRA tracks but the guys I know did it. Two guys I know ran SS/DA 70 Hemi Cudas.
We finally got a track in 1980 but it was all over by then. I built a couple of race cars but when you work weekends, nights and all over the province it's pretty hard to stay in it. Here I am warming up the tires getting ready to dispatch a dedicated race car with my Street Hemi in 1980.

Thought these were pretty cool. Check out the wagon as a tow car.
I wonder what diff that is in the top picture? Almost looks like a quick change used in circle track?
It does but it's pretty big.
I would imagine by the late 60s the serious racers were beginning to look at specialized racing housings, some based of traditional quick change designs and some modified designs. Current offerings come from Stange and Mark Williams like these: https://www.dragzine.com/tech-stories/drivetrain/modular-rear-end-housings-101-with-mark-williams-enterprises/ but I'd imagine they were just starting design and development in this era.
I believe that is Bob Wriggles Hurst Hemi under Glass , & with the odd position of the engine & drive train & recall he used a quick change diff
Anyone have any pics of Tritak & Morgan's 69 Super Bee?
Can't quite see the names on the cars but that distinctive color scheme gives them away.
Talk about timing. Went to my model car site and this was posted. I am starting to build some car haulers for my dioramas I am currently building. Some pretty cool cars with some recognizable names in this.

Looks like he took the rims and tires off the 'Bird and put them on the trailer?

I built my Duster back in 85 & every pass & even on the street it would pull the front wheels 2 feet at will , kinda got boring after a while !
I later changed the hood to the 6 pack scoop :burnout:

Impressive I thought....

re 1171: Bob Glidden was a big contributor to the development of the W2 program back when Pro Stock as doing funky gyrations around weight breaks and small blocks started creeping into the class.
Yup: Bob won with Ford, Mopar and Chevy and it didn't seem to take him too long to adapt to anything new.

I'm going to say a Mopar won that race!
Interesting that 4 Canadians liked that drag race, but no Americans, hmm.
Two Excellent mopar's, What is not to like!!! The hard part is who to root for.
That Super Bee looks like it's hooked a bit harder I bet it got out on the Cuda.

That is Indianapolis, Good Guys event. I think it was in 1999. My friends dad built and raced that car back around 1970. The first twin rear engine car. about 80% of the car is original. Top fuel, but he only runs about 30% nitro to try to preserve the engines. Original builder/driver was Rico Paris.

I spent a lot of time at this drag strip when it was still around long ago.
Coletti funny car
Cool video with some great racing segments.
Another E-body versus A-body run. Why do A-body guys always try to line up against the E-body and B-body guys?

To go back in time when everything was new. 8)
If one is good ---two must be better. :driving:
I've always wondered, if you arrived at the local bracket bash on a Friday night with a dual engined vehicle, how would the tech gays handle it? Obviously these days you can build a single engine to be a monster, but the sheer wow factor of a dual engine bracket racer is kind of neat.
8) Very creative induction setup.
I love the cross flow intake on the Hemi taalk about a straight path !!
But trying to pull in air at a 90* angle at 200 MPH would hardly be efficient & with the massive heat from the headers just below .....
WTH??? I'm not even sure what I'm looking at. Wonder if this set up even worked, but you have to give them credit for being creative.
These are just bad to the bone. :stayinlane:
One less Hemi..... :bye:
I really like the paint scheme on this one.
Wonder if this has a HEMI under the hood. :yessir:
This one sure does. :stayinlane:
I think this is the wreck that started Big Daddy to developed the rear engine dragster. Big power produces big damage, for sure. :o
Doing it old school.

That's a whole lot of motor.
Old school cool.
Like the color blended with the black and white,

This must be from his early years. I have never seen this version of Garlets car.
The original barrel cuda. How cool it must of been to work in this shop. :burnout:
This thread is NOT helping me decide not to buy a race car....
Lots of cool pics. Sure wish I had some pics of my '69 GTX at Tulsa NHRA drags way back, with my wife driving!! Alas not at the top of my list to-do back then ):
It's not a mopar pic--- but this is one nasty looking motor. When you have Ed Pink along with Shelby's name on your Ford it's got to be bad ass. :yessir: 8)
That car is on display at Canepa Motorsports, a world class Porsche restorer and racing facility. Every once in a while, they'll fire it up at a cars 'n coffee.

Early 70s. Always trying to innovate, Garlits tried several different aerodynamic bodies in this time frame. As evidenced by their adoption by others, not all were successful.

:ohyeah: Interesting! They get points.
No points! Wrong color shaker and probably not numbers matching!
:)) I am not a betting man, but I would put money on no matching numbers. Although, I do like the Mopar recognition.

Looks expensive....

When you hear the name Keith Black I immediately think HEMI. Wonder how many motors have come thru those doors over the years.
Found this cool video of the early days of drag racing.
Don Garlits turned 92 yesterday and still going strong in racing. I read a while back he was developing an electric dragster. Happy birthday Big Daddy. :happybday:

He certainly was willing to experiment in the pursuit of speed. While his rear engine dragster was his most successful innovation, he had a few dogs along the way too. Like the fully enclosed Swamp Rat 17 or the mono-strut wing pedestal.
PSA.... make sure ya tighten those oil pan bolts!
Looks costly?
