Work has been started. I don't want to call this a restoration (at least not yet), but it may turn into one. I have started taking my purple car apart. So far it looks like it might be a candidate for full quarters in the rear. Have a look and tell me what you think. I don't have full quarters, all I have are quarter skins. I'm thinking I can use the skins on my other car and maybe get new full quarters for this car.
The only other idea is to patch these up. The car will be getting a new vinyl top so any work will get covered up with that. I plan on putting a new roof skin on this and already have that. I already put the new deck lid on to see how it fits. Other plans are new trunk extensions and a drivers side floor repair. I'm sure the more I dig in the more I'm going to find. Stay tuned for more as this will be a quite a project.
The more you dig the more that is normally found. How's the frame rails and floor boards?
If it was me, I would lean towards full quarter panels over skins. I prefer the idea of having a full panel over a patch job. But it's about 6 of one and a half dozen of the other.

Cody, the frame rails are good front and rear. It has a bad spot in the drivers side floor. Looks like the windshield leaked and right under the pad rotted. I have a new drivers floor pan to fix that. I know what you mean about 6 of one half a dozen of the other with the quarters. It is hard to see in the pictures, but the sail panels have some rust holes that will have to be cut out and patched if I don't go full quarters. I'm trying to keep this from going way over budget, but then I want to do it right. :dunno:
Looks like the fun is going to start on this project. :wrenching:
Sorry to see ol' Purple1 out of commission for a while, but excited that you're going to get to work on it! Good luck, Dave.
You did not mention you were taking her apart but it look like it was about time to do so , I hope it all goes smoothly :bigthumb:
Somehow I sense a case of " mission creep" coming on. Looks like you have a good game plan though!
I ld buy from Dave / Roseville , he can explain what the differences are as they do in house restos too
More rust found... :(
Last night I got the temporary patch removed from the drivers side floor. Man I put that in to stay put! After a struggle I got it out though and as the photo shows it is a large hole. The passenger side looks fine, and so does the rest of the floor. Just this hole in the drivers side I have to fix.
Then I moved on to the windshield. I cut the goop around the top and down the sides, and the thing came right out. The bottom channel is all rusted out. So it looks like I am going to need at least the upper cowl or upper firewall, whatever you call it, replaced too.
The list of repair panels is growing, as well as the depth of the work. :wrenching:
If the rest of your cowl section is solid, that channel is easy to repair. And you would get to keep your Cowl VIN numbers.
There's always more rust then expected once you start looking. But overall it does not look very bad. I've seen a lot worse.
Tonights progress...
You don't waste any time! :veryexcited: Looks really solid under there.
That's a reason why i hate vinyl top cars. They always have rust under there.
You could get some lexan for that and have the biggest sunroof ever. :haha:
I give you credit Dave.
You have more guts than I do to take on that project.
If you ever need any help, let me know.

I agree!! (on the guts part - I'm afraid I'm too far away to help or I'd volunteer to do that as well!!) :)
A little more done. I am going to have to let this be for a while. I may have fractured my finger last night. It really hurts today.
Hope your finger gets better soon.
If you have pulled the quarters yet, make sure you line up the door so you can use it to line up the new quarter panel.
Solid looking car. I know the good ones need the outer metal replaced too but you still feel better about it because the underneath is good.
No progress last night. The good news is my finger is much better. The swelling has gone down and I can move it. Still hurts like he!!, but at lest it's not broke. So I should be back to the car in another day or two. :veryexcited:
Glad to hear it's not broke.
Little more work last night. I got the floor ready to patch and started to fit my patch panel. I still need to cut the patch a little more to get an exact fit, but it is close. l couldn't do much more, my finger still hurts a bit.
Good job that will be one of the last patch jobs I'll be doing. No pain no Gain
Started fitting my new trunk extension on the passenger side. Then I ran out of welding wire for the mig. Looks like a trip to the store tomorrow.
Were you able to text fit the quarter panel with the trunk drop off? Sometimes they can need a little "tuning" to get them to fit good. Yours looks like it's going in nicely.
I am going to use the quarter skin to patch this side. My patch will only be going up to just below the body line. I still got some small patches to fit under this quarter, so I have not test fit this one yet. But the only place I'm worried about is the fit at the rear valence area since the rest of this quarter is staying in place.
I started to install the new roof this weekend. So far so good. My new spot welder is working great for this.
You're making it look so easy! :bravo:
If you ever need some side work I would hire you to work in my shop. :bigthumb:
We always come up with a reason to buy a new tool of some sort..............You look to be doing a great job............nice spacing. Glad the welder is working as you wanted.........
Roof is done.
Moving on now.
Very nice! Good job man.
Nice! Fast too.
Passenger side quarter almost done. I should be moving to the drivers side quarter later this week.
Looking good. :bigthumb:
Dave,
If you need help, let me know. I know nothing about body work, but I can hold a panel while you weld or whatever.

Mike, I'm here almost every evening and the weekends working on this. If you want to wait till it is time to put every thing back together, but any help would be welcomed.
Got a little more done this weekend. I didn't get to the other quarter yet like I wanted to. At least I got the floor done and the passenger side quarter is almost ready. Also I got the roof blended in.
Good job man.
That looks good. Not much warpage on the quarter I hope.
Making great progress
Over the weekend I got the drivers side quarter cut off. This side has had some damage and was full of body filler, as well as a very poor patch job. They also covered right over some rust holes with filler. I started patching under the quarter and started fitting the trunk drop down. Because of the hidden damage, I cut more of this quarter off. Hopefully I can get this one installed this week.
If the rust/bondo/damage was that much, why not just install full quarters at the factory seams ? You're going to end up with twice as much body work and filler again once you're done ?
Damn - I really wish I could be hanging out with ya Dave, watching this process take place. It'd be some very useful knowledge and experience!!

I would have liked to have full quarters. But I already bought these quarter skins and need to use them. I'm trying to do this on a very tight budget. I know what you mean about the body work, the passenger side has been a real pain. But I'm not too worried about a little bondo. I just don't want the half inch thick shitty patch job I found under the paint here. The damage/bono was in front of the wheel and the rust was behind the wheel, all that is getting completely replaced with this.

Jeff, I would welcome you here. I couldn't pay, I can offer to feed you, but that's about all I can afford.
Might be cheaper to pay him. :haha: :pokeeye:

Admiring the metal and body work you are doing on Purple
Really great job!
Doing a good job there Dave, looks like you won't be taking 7 or 8 years like I did as time and mostly money allowed me to

Thanks Doug. My goal is to make it to Carlisle next year with the car and the trailer with both of them getting painted at the same time. But I have been collecting parts getting ready for this for a long time.
More progress. I'm almost ready to fit this quarter.
Are you protecting the glass from weld splatter ?

I didn't even think about that. The glass has some scratches already. I hope I didn't f it up bad.
I just checked the glass. No damage from the welding, but it really has some deep scratches. So I will look through the other parts glass for the best and swap it out. Thanks for pointing that out. I will be more careful now. This is still a learning process for me.
Yup: We all learned that one at some point.
weld will attach itself into the glass , plastic it will just bounce off .\
At least you did not do any significant damage :bigthumb:
3M makes A product called spark paper, pricey but effective. :alan2cents:
Another day or so and this side will be done. I got some small patches in the trunk area and then I can move forward. I'm going to pull the dash next.
Looking good. :lookatthat:
Great Progress Dave !! :bigthumb:
I took a few days off from this. I'm starting to burn out a little. No new pics, but I have made some progress. finishing up some little details in the trunk area and getting more done on the body work. Just want to keep you updated.
:bigthumb:
Dave, how's the progress coming? Or are you taking time out for the holidays?

I burned out a little. I really need to get back to it, but now the garage is too dammed cold to be enjoyable. That and funds have run low. So I'm waiting for the funds to build up again.
Its hard to build funds around Christmas time............Progress is fast sometimes and then slows down.......but spring is around the corner...........You will get thru...............
