...to this.... :o

About 30 hours to disassemble carefully, 8 hours to strip doors, strip motor/transmission assembly and another 10 hours scraping undercoating and stripping out the old seam sealer...

He's done so many now... he's starting to restore them in reverse.  :o  lol  Sometimes cars that look nice are still in need of some love.  Looking forward to seeing this one come back stronger then before.   :burnout:

:unbelievable:  Wow, that's a lot of plastic to fill in all the holes.  Bet the owner is super happy his having you do this now.

Any idea who did the last restoration / paint job?

Yes the owner is super happy, I decided to have Alan tear it down and do the car right.

I could driven as is for quite some time.

But I would have been trying to upgrade a bit of the car at a time and it never would have been done.

Alan convinced me to do the entire car correctly.  And I will know exactly what I have when it is completed.

I completely understand how filler and paint can hide a lot, but that is pretty amazing.

Is there a restoration thread on this one?  Alan, do you have a page dedicated to this restoration, I would like to watch progress IF you are documenting it that way.

Thanks,

So, I'm going to ask the question that perhaps no one else is comfortable asking...   or answering...

How much is this going to cost?

I ask for a few, solid reasons.

For one, I'm curious myself, as this could very well be something I'd have to pay for some day, as I too lack the skills to do it myself.  I'd like to have an idea what I could be getting in to.

Second, I think it's important information for someone to know whether they're buying or selling a car.  If you're buying, well then my first point applies.  If you're SELLING, then you need to have an understanding that, unless you had a similar restoration done at a similar cost, your buyer is likely going to have to have this done, and just because you spent X dollars on your own restoration, it doesn't make their restoration X dollars cheaper, since the first thing you do is remove everything that was done during the last one.

Lastly, a lot of folks have been skewed by shows like Overhaulin' and Fast & Loud where a car is acquired, "restored," and sold all within a 30-60 minute TV show, and they make it look easy.  As a result, folks do NOT expect the price tags they receive when looking to have similar work done themselves.

So I ask because I think that, while it might be considered a "personal" thing, I think it's information that could be really useful to a lot of folks.

How much does what cost ? A complete restoration ? or just the rust repair ?

My 100% complete ground up restorations start at about $60K CDN or $45K USD. That includes everything from a rebuilt motor/tranny/suspension/steering/interior etc etc etc
That DOES NOT include any rust repair or replacing or adding hard to find rare parts.

Rust repair can go from $1 to $100000000000.00 depending. This rust repair might get close to $8500-$10K CDN or $6K-$7K USD

:haha: :haha: :haha: :haha: :haha: :haha: The cost of the paint job is in the original $60K.....

In the case of this black Cuda I expect taking the shell from black paint to bare steel, through rust repair, and back to black paint to cost about $30K -$35K CDN

Gotcha - that was the number I was looking for and actually the number I was expecting.  That's about what the small shop I used to work for in North-East'ish PA would charge for a repaint with body repair.  We'd always get that typical, "But the car isn't worth that much!" response...

@kdcarman (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/kdcarman_184)  that is your car?  You might have already told us that, so sorry if I forgot.   :congrats:  you have a sweet car!!!!   :inlove:  And it's in great hands.  There are very few people in the world I would ever let touch my cars, but if I had to pick one guy it would probably be Alan.  It's hard to beat what he can do, what he knows and the end product he returns for the money it costs.   :1place:

Right, Alan would have my car done a month sooner if he spent less time on his computer.

Really I am looking forward to having Alan complete the car.  My dream car was to have a special black Cuda.  If I had not met Alan, I would have just driven the car as is.  It was older paint job - done in approx the year 2000.  Did not look bad at all.  BUt when Alan is done I will have a new car.

OR, those who think $2160.00 Cnd for four spindly, retro tires (before shipping but including taxes) is truly too much to pay for that particular rat's patooty! And, God forbid they get driven on or bumped into a curb or hammered in a burnout! Not my cup of tea, although at those prices, it could be a cup of 20 year old single malt! Maybe that's what happens before those lads go for those tires. LOL  :D

Wait!! You actually want to drive your car????  Who does that???  I can buy three sets of tires that actually ride good & handle good for less than the cost of these tires that "look" like tires from 1970... And perform about the same..... Pass.....

Thanks guys...
#1 Bolts are just wire wheeled one at a time, washed and painted flat black....I found this real cheap paint that goes on thin and doesn't build-up affecting the threads or chip while tightening. Looks a lot like black phosphate but won't rust.

#2 I've never replaced the cloth covering, but I would look into the antique auto market area.....I've seen it before at a flea market, not sure what purpose it had, but was very similar.

Never owned a black car so I bought a black car as my daily driver. What a mistake. It looks good the day you drive it off the lot and you spend every weekend trying to keep it that way. Canadian winters with a black car? Have to take out a second mortgage on the house to pay my car wash bills. I assume that it would be a different story for an occasional driver like a cuda though.

I'll step up and defend black. Yes it shows every spot and I spend a lot of time wiping it down but when it's clean it looks oh so good!  :inlove: If you're not willing to spend the extra time it takes then it's not the colour for you. I have two of them, no regrets. Actually I have three because my truck is also black but its my daily driver and I don't pamper it, it's going to end up in the scrap yard anyway.

What do you do to take care of the black?
Will you/do you use the "dust mop"?
I figure I wont be able to take it our without a spray and wipe with Meguiars Detailer?

I also owned black cars. '70 w-31 was black and '09 Challenger was black metallic. My current 2016 Charger is black.
My '09 Challenger won best paint in a local car show. A bit of work keeping a black car looking good but well worth it.

That 'Cuda is gonna look Bad Ass in black!

Polish and wax in the winter. Then, maybe, once over with black detailer mid to late summer. I sweep it with the California Duster when I take the cover off and maybe when I get to a show. Dirt and bugs are spot treated with a wet microfibre towel and dried with another microfibre towel. Sometimes I give the whole car a microfibre massage just to bring up the shine a bit.

I have had my black cuda for 36 years and I don't think it is that difficult to keep up. Just be careful where you park it.  I have some messy trees in front of the house that drip sap, seeds and the occasional stick.  I use microfiber towels a lot and once in awhile hit it with a California Duster.   Couple years ago, I had it out all season and think I washed it twice all year.

It is hard to beat a black ebody . . .  :worship:

First off....my neighborhood is pretty empty during the day, and the cars I have are never "outside" very long.....actually, you would never know what goes on in here.

Actually yesterday a trades person working on a neighbor's a couple of doors down came over while I was unloading....was asking if I knew where he could get the rust fixed on his van.....he thought the paint was nice on the Cuda, but shit a brick when I told him how much....He also had to ask what kind of car it was.... :looney:

Im my opinion, the flat black stripes against a super nice black paint job like yours makes for the best looking Mopars. I remember a black AAR I saw in Carlisle a couple of years ago. The stripes look so subtle until you catch them in the right light.

This car also has original moldings and reproduction clips. I held the moldings in place, marked the area where the clips go in the trim. Then with my small grinder, I opened up the areas on the trim, a little on each side.
Just another PITA when dealing with reproduction parts :pullinghair:

Alan. What kind of method you use to install door top moldings? I have original moldings on my car but cant get them installed... repro clips came from MegaParts.

This car also has original moldings and reproduction clips. I held the moldings in place, marked the area where the clips go in the trim. Then with my small grinder, I opened up the areas on the trim, a little on each side.
Just another PITA when dealing with reproduction parts :pullinghair:

Thanks for the info - I need to try something similar...

A small confession.....This car left the factory a TX9 black car, with a V1X black vinyl top and H6X9 black interior.....but regrettably not coded for the V6X black stripe :crying:....but who can blame the owner for wanting to add that very subtle touch that SCREAMS coolness :drooling:

Sorry, but that's totally incorrect information. Challenger RT's came standard with stripes, On all Cuda's stripes were optional.

I would think not.

There's no such thing as a "stripe delete" Cuda.

Stripes were an extra cost option on EVERY Cuda, and as stated only available in gloss black. (1970)

So YES there are plenty of 440+6 or Hemicuda's that left the factory with no stripes.
Title: Re: AGAR...TX9 Six Pack ..Stripes ?
Post by: 6bblgt on March 16, 2018, 10:54:03 PM
1970:
'cuda's OPTIONAL "sport stripes" V6X (BLACK ONLY) $25.90 & installation rate was ~24%
'cuda's OPTIONAL "protective body side moulding w/pinstripes" V5_ (available in red, white, blue, green, black) $29.45 & installation rate was ~20%
'cuda's  OPTIONAL "TRANS AM" package A53 included V6H "AAR strobe stripes" (BLACK ONLY) & installation rate was ~16%
'cuda's OPTIONAL mid-year "strobe stripes" V4_ (available in magenta, chartreuse, white, black) $25.90 & installation rate was very low

that leaves ~40% 1970 'cudas (BS) with no stripes

DING DING DING....We have a winner.....nothing like lining everything up for the vinyl roof install and then finding out the customer supplied the wrong one....but in @kdcarman (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/kdcarman_184) defense.... the Legendary Auto Interior box was labeled correctly, just had the wrong part inside...and I guess by now I should have learned to check all the parts when they come in... :headbang:

YES those are 47 year old original springs, re-arched with new bushings, inter liners etc....they will settle with mileage....it's only going to get lower it can't get any higher....

Arrived in Illinois this afternoon, safe and sound :clapping:
What region of Illinois is it in, I'm hoping it's somewhere in my area so maybe I can lay eyes on it at some event this summer!  :wowzers:

I'm in the other end of Cook County, in Mt Prospect.  Will you be going to the CMC Belvidere show in July, or ever head west to Morris for the monthly huge cruise, or the Lions club show in October?

I don't generally get out for those shows. Although I want to try to make it out to the Morris event  (those are on Saturday?)

The Morris cruise is the second Saturday of the month June through October.  Officially starts at 6 but you don't want to try to bring a car at 6.  Cars start arriving around 3 and the crowds start building by 5... by 6 there are usually 900 cars there and the streets packed with spectators.  It's my favorite cruise even though it's 65 miles away from my house.
The Morris Lions car show is on a Sunday in October and is actually one of the biggest car shows in the Chicago area.  1100-1200 cars, decent size swap meet, car corral, big food court.  Weather is usually great.  Other than MCACN, the last hurrah of the years car show and cruise season.
