Title: Anyone watching Barrett Jackson?
Post by: Cuda Cody on January 18, 2017, 06:53:38 PM
Thinking I'll grab a beer and catch some of the show.  Anyone seen any cool E-Bodies go over the block yet?

I believe a 70 barracuda went over about an hour ago.

They must be behind there pushing them through pretty fast

Just caught the last hour of coverage tonight. But didn't see any E-bodies.  What did the 440+6 clone sell for?

Watched a bit of recorded BJ this morning and that yellow 440+6 cuda clone looked really nice for the $36k it went for!

:iagree:  That looked to be a nice car, but I would assume there were some things wrong with it.  As know you, the way it looks on camera can be significantly different than seeing it in person.  BTW - they updated the final price (including commission) to $39,600.

That '71 Pink Barracuda with the fake shaker hood went for $55,000 and didn't look nearly as nice.

  between the 70 Yellow 440+6 Cuda clone and the 71 Hemi Cuda Clone, I thought the Yellow one was far better condition and a better value.   :alan2cents:

Yeah I couldn't believe that.

The other thing I really liked about the BJ auction is the pace at which the cars went across.

Sometimes when I'm watching Mecum it friggin takes forever and I just lose interest in watching yet another corvette or camaro cross the block.  :bricks:

That T/A was about right for what it was.  I would have guessed a little higher, but even on the quick shots on the TV you could see a lot of things that would need a little work. :alan2cents:

It's not looking good for E-Body prices right now.  I know you have to be there, but this V-Code RT/SE looked like a great deal at $50k.  Color and Auto didn't help it, but only $50k?

Looking forward to seeing more E-Bodies go over the block!

What are some of the things that it needed? I don't think it was numbers matching drivetrain. And the seat belts were hanging down when Christy was showing it, but I didn't see anything major wrong. Although she is distracting.

From the couple seconds they showed the dark lit engine bay I could see that it had holes all over the firewall, painted blower motor (should be zinc plated), non T/A valve covers, parts store hoses, non painted by pass, local auto parts store battery, non painted intake and things like that.  Doesn't get me wrong, there's nothing necessarily bad about those parts, it's just if you want to get top dollar at the biggest auction it would need to have more attention to details and correct parts.

WTH is up with the root beer colored 1969 D200, that's crazy prices like setting records

Seems most cars are bringing in less money than before, most of the old vettes used to bring in 75-85k now they are in the 50's.

A good friend was there last year and he couldn't belive what cars were selling for. A demon /6 with a 340 got 38k and it looked bad a 20ft. Mopars were running the show last year. Looks like it might have changed

70 Charger made to look like a 68 went for 95k I think.

It's really interesting to see the delta between the purist prices and the mod prices.

The GT's were bringing 300-350 but it looks like that is a thing of the past.

I saw more modded cars take home $$$ than purist cars it seems.

70 340 #s Challenger for 37K!! There can't be a very strong Mopar crowd at BJ. I'm sure the same car would have brought somewhere around double at Mecum a week ago.
Title: Re: Anyone watching Barrett Jackson?
Post by: Cuda Cody on January 22, 2017, 12:33:50 PM
Anyone have any ideas where the money went?  Was the crowds down this year or was there anything else that could be playing a factor?  There's always some cars that are better then others, but across the board the Mopar prices seem down.   :notsure:
Title: Re: Anyone watching Barrett Jackson?
Post by: anlauto on January 22, 2017, 12:47:30 PM
I don't think the price of Mopars is down at all.....ever since BJ introduced the "no reserve" auctions, they stopped getting quality cars. :alan2cents:
The cars at BJ were not quality cars at all.
Title: Re: Anyone watching Barrett Jackson?
Post by: blown motor on January 22, 2017, 12:51:45 PM
When did they go to no reserve auctions?
Title: Re: Anyone watching Barrett Jackson?

Been that way for awhile now.   I know a few people that take cars to BJ.  I prefer to build my own cars or have someone I trust do it.   :alan2cents:
Title: Re: Anyone watching Barrett Jackson?
Post by: HP_Cuda on January 22, 2017, 11:51:31 PM

BJ and other high end auction houses have gone no reserve for one reason = they get paid no matter what.

I'm thinking of doing a little homework and checking out the BJ Mopar auction prices to see what sold and what didn't.

Alright let's break down this BJ Scottsdale auction purely from a numbers perspective. There will be differences of opinion on quality of build and other things but at least we have data. I cannot believe that all these Mopars are bad builds right?

I was going to do other builds but since this is an ebody site let's stick to that for now:

Cuda
====
Lot 521 - 1971 PLYMOUTH BARRACUDA CUSTOM HARDTOP 55k
Lot 530 - 1970 PLYMOUTH 'CUDA 39.6k

Lot 1071 - 1971 PLYMOUTH 'CUDA 101.2k  (Actual V-Code w/ 4 speed)
Lot 1302 - 1970 PLYMOUTH BARRACUDA CUSTOM CONVERTIBLE 79.2k
Lot 1337 - 1970 PLYMOUTH BARRACUDA "TORC" 129.8k  (Massively customized with cummins diesel)
Lot 1345 - 1972 PLYMOUTH BARRACUDA MATTEL HOT WHEELS "SNAKE II" FUNNY CAR 220k
Lot 1350 - 1970 PLYMOUTH HEMI 'CUDA 302.5k
Lot 1354 - 1970 PLYMOUTH BARRACUDA CUSTOM COUPE 154k

Challenger
=======
Lot 540.1 - 1970 DODGE CHALLENGER 35.2k
Lot 703 - 1970 DODGE CHALLENGER CUSTOM CONVERTIBLE 37.4k
Lot 776 - 1973 DODGE CHALLENGER CUSTOM COUPE 53.9k
Lot 781 - 1970 DODGE CHALLENGER T/A 57.2k
Lot 790.1 - 1970 DODGE CHALLENGER R/T SE 55k
Lot 933 - 1971 DODGE CHALLENGER R/T 55k
Lot 1001 - 1971 DODGE CHALLENGER CONVERTIBLE 60.5k
Lot 1016 - 1970 DODGE CHALLENGER CUSTOM COUPE 79.2k
Lot 1031 - 1970 DODGE CHALLENGER T/A 67.1k
Lot 1080 - 1970 DODGE CHALLENGER CUSTOM COUPE 220k
Lot 1130 - 1970 DODGE CHALLENGER R/T HEMI RE-CREATION CONVERTIBLE 73.7k
Lot 1321 - 1971 DODGE CHALLENGER R/T CONVERTIBLE RE-CREATION 77k
Lot 1575.2 - 1970 DODGE CHALLENGER 40.7k

So what conclusions do I draw from this last auction, custom cars cleaned up! Looks like the Hemi Cuda craze is kinda dying off and owning a piece of racing history is in. Remind me, weren't the V-codes bringing in > 120k not long ago?

Anyway, food for thought.

One of the things Scott Smith (Harms) mentioned was the weather.  He was down there and said it was raining buckets on Friday and then Saturday the wind picked up.  If the crowds were turned off by this it could have an effect on the price?   :dunno:  He seemed to think it did.  But even with bad weather in the past, the prices seemed to still hold up somewhat.  But this was definitely a down year for Mopar.  How much you want to bet that in the next year or two the Mopars will not show up in the volume they were this year and we'll see a ton of customs modded cars and VW buses?
Title: Re: Anyone watching Barrett Jackson?

Foul weather might keep some spectators away but I doubt that it would deter a serious car buyer. This is an indoor event for the most part. If there was a car there that I wanted to buy it would take tornado warnings to keep me away. Maybe living in the great white north has me a little immuned to foul weather.
Title: Re: Anyone watching Barrett Jackson?
Post by: Cuda Cody on January 23, 2017, 11:07:57 AM
You're probably right.  If I wanted a certain car I would not let the weather stop me.  From experience I can tell you being there and getting caught up in the action is easy to do.  One year I almost bought a Camaro! (someone out bid me at the last minute, thank goodness)  I probably added $5k to the final price as me and that other guy were the last two going back and forth on it.  That same year my buddy bought a Mustang.   :drunk:   I've learn to not drink and get wrapped up in the hype.

Was thinking with less people "having fun in the sun" and the downer rain could put on things, it might have kept a few cars from being bid up by party people.  But like you said, serious buyers come there to buy what they want and the rain is not going to stop them.

@70mopes (http://forum.e-bodies.org/index.php?action=profile;u=25)     I too was finding it hard to watch.  Not much for Mopars are shown on TV and the commercials are like twice as long as they should be.  I record it and watch it in fast forward a few hours after it's happened.  That way I can see what I want and not waste all day.

Was it me or did the early part of the auction move the cars a bit faster through and then towards Fri, Sat and Sunday they slow down to molasses?

Oh and on Sunday, it was like the dregs and almost half the audience were already gone. Why bother?

I just kept clicking back to the auction now and then to see what is on the block at that moment . . . couldn't sit and watch for very long as I get bored when the car up for bid is something I don't care how much it sells for.   :dunno:
