Title: Need carpet
Post by: mjb765 on March 28, 2017, 05:23:25 PM
I am taking the seats out to install a hidden stereo and since I went that far I want to take the carpet out to install sound deadener mats and since it doesn't fit great now, why put it back. Who makes the best fitting molded carpet for the 70 Cuda?

Carpet is fairly inexpensive and since you have the seats out it's a great idea to replace it.  I really like ACC and I get it from @MoparDave (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/mopardave_10)

I appreciate the opinion...but I have one question. His carpet is $100 more than the "genuine Mopar restoration" version on the Jims website. Is there a reason that you know of? Just wondering if there really is that much of a difference??  I am more than willing to pay the extra $100 if it is better--not a problem, just wondering.  Unless that's just MSRP???

Pretty sure they are the same supplier.  When I look at the price they are both within $5 ($169.95 to $174.95) and I know @MoparDave (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/mopardave_10)  give us a great deal so it's going to be less from him for sure.  Send him and PM and he'll get you a quote.   :alan2cents:  Just let him know you're with the E-Bodies.org group if you call him so he knows to give you the discount.

Do you think an additional sound deadener with the Mass backing is needed? I guess it can't hurt.....

Thanks for the Rockauto discount reminder....

As for the sound deadener....I figured as much and that's how this whole thing started--me just wanting to do the sound deadener under the carpet...then the carpet....now maybe inside the doors.....the project snowball is in full effect.....guess I will order 2 packs of the fatmat sheets for a total of 72ft since I don't think I am going to mess with the headliner to do the roof, but I did like the idea of the wheel wells and package tray.

The very BEST fitting carpet is sold by ECS Automotive but it isn't cheap. I think it's close to $500. The difference is that the ECS carpet is never folded and stuffed in a box for shipping. It's shipped flat so the carpet keeps its molded shape. The extra cost is the special handling and shipping process. I believe the carpet is still made by ACC.

At the very least, you should order carpet right before you need to install it. Right after receiving it, you should remove it from the box and lay it out. That way there is less chance it can lose its shape. Even then, there is no guarantee that the carpet is brand new. It could have been in the box for months/years.

Only you can decide which way is best.

I've installed two ECS carpets that customers insisted on using. Yes they are nice, but it my opinion...highly over rated. You can achieve the same results with the less expensive carpet. :alan2cents:

carpets,
basic inexpensive is trim parts carpet typical of what you get from y/o or oer/classic. then a better would be the ACC with mass back. then ECS. the front is folded and it is shipped freight based on the last one I installed, you will still have to trim play with every carpet. just depends on what you want to spend.
i'll send you pricing on the trim parts and the acc with mass back

ACC is fine, I've never had a problem with it being folded up.

ACC from Dave is the ticket.

I never had a problem with ACC, got it, unfolded it - left it in the Sun for a few hours and installed it.

Went like a charm. I had more issues with cutting out the 4 speed hole than anything else (cannot screw this up).

Do you think an additional sound deadener with the Mass backing is needed? I guess it can't hurt.....

If you're goal is sound deadening, I'd say definitely get the mass backing.
In addition to the sound deadening (and temperature insulating) features, the rubber mass backing also helps the carpet to keep it's molded shape.  While not as pristine as being shipped flat, it's a big step up from cheaper smashed into a box carpet.

Another thing for you to consider is Lizard Skin sprayable sound deadener.
Every cut and seam in the stick on sound deadener mats (like Dynamat) is a sound leak.  Shaping those mats to fit all the complex contours of a floorboard will result in a lot of cuts and seams, along with a time consuming install.
Sprayable sound deadener is seamless, easy, and fast.
Some people are concerned about whether it's removable.  I've never had a reason to uninstall my sound deadening, but I imagine there would be some way to get it off if you really wanted to.  Those super sticky mats aren't exactly easy to remove either.

Lizard skin would be fine, if the interior was completely apart. I don't think spray on is the answer for me, although I see your point with the seams.

I don't like losing a sale but, If the price is good and the customer gets what was ordered that's a win win.  I don't like getting into a pickle over pricing. they get a better price that's cool. ACC gives them a major discount.

That's the way to get and keep customers. I wouldn't think twice about contacting you for something else...and if the price was even close you would get the sale......but $80 was a bit much on a $175 item.....Cody was right..you are a stand up guy!

I put an ACC mass backed carpet in my convertible in 2015, and am very pleased with it.
I ordered mine from Rock Auto over a weekend, and it was on my doorstep when I got home from work on Thursday.
I unboxed it and laid it out flat immediately after getting home.
In most cases I believe ACC carpet is made to order, so if you unbox it immediately and lay it flat after getting it, it hasn't been in the box long enough to develop any creases.
I was flamed on one of the other Mopar websites by several posters who said I obviously don't know anything about manufacturing because they don't think they are made to order. Some of my engineering coworkers at manufacturing companies I've worked at over the last 25 years might agree with that statement!  :P
I didn't check my carpet box, but I did get some matching ACC floor mats several months later, and checked the date codes on them, and the date code on the box was the same day as the shipping date of my mats.  They were made the same day they were shipped!
When you think of how many cars and trucks, variety of colors, different piles etc ACC would have to keep in inventory, it really doesn't make sense that they would keep most SKUs in inventory, maybe some of their biggest sellers and a few returns but otherwise, chances are you will get a fresh carpet when you place an order with them.
I admire what ECS does and am a customer, but IMO it's not worth the extra money and time to get a laid flat carpet from them.
But in the end everyone has to decide what they think best for them, your results may vary!

I just put down Rattletrap sound deadener in my Cuda.  Took almost 50 sq ft to do front and back under carpet.  I wasn't sure what it would take so ordered 100.   Will do trunk and doors with rest of it and have some left over for another project.  I really liked it and has some good reviews.  I used aluminum tape where i cut for relief and splice some pieces in.  Reasonable and sticks well to a clean floor.

Thanks Cody and Mike, Alan for the positive comments. the market is small and very competitive.
