I had a 1974 Challenger with a 5.7 Hemi and sold it back to the guy who started the build a little over a year ago after having the car for 4 1/2 years. I have decided to do a Hemi swap in my 1973 Challenger as it was just a 318 and I couldn't hurt the value. I have missed the modern hemi in my old Challenger so I have bought a 6.4 crate engine and will do the swap as time permits as I work a full time job. I'm going to put a overdrive automatic in it and dakota digital modern gauges which I had put in the 1974 while I had it. I'm going to sell the 360 and 727 transmission which were rebuilt when I restored the Challenger. Here is a picture of the 6.4 and the Challenger it will go in.
Very cool....I just bought an A41 Automatic from Silver Sport Transmissions for behind a 392 Hemi in a 70 Charger I'm doing....It's going to be an interesting change from all the manual transmissions everybody usually wants... https://shiftsst.com/blog/post/challenger-barracuda-1970-1974-perfectfit-kit.html
Keep a build thread going so we can all follow along... :cooldance:
I'm looking at the silver sport A41 automatic so I don't have to cut tunnel to make the 8 speed fit.
Great project, should make for a fun car.
I'm looking at the stuff Holley offers for the Gen 3 swap but I'm not sure what engine controller and wiring harness I will go with.

The harness kit is back in stock at Chrysler, or I believe DYIHEMI has a version as well
Made some progress with the engine and transmission are pulled out and the 3rd member has been removed. I'm going to use the Holley computer and wiring harness as the computer is tunable and will operate my automatic transmission. Here are a few pictures of the progress.
Been getting the engine ready and have change the oil pan to the Holley VVT pan and got the mounts put on and ready for a trial fit. I also put the Holley front timing cover on but still don't have my Holley computer or wiring harness. It has been on back order now for 5 months and may have to go a different route if I want to get it going this year. Here are few pictures of the progress.
I have had my share of back ordered parts but I'm back on track with the engine being installed along with the transmission and I have my Hooker blackheart stainless steel headers. The holley hooker blackheart engine mounts move the engine forward 1 inch causing my transmission mount to be to short. I didn't think 1 inch would cause this big of a gap but it did. Here are a few pictures of my progress.
Transmission is in and bolted up. It is a tighter fit than I thought it would be. Here are some pictures of my progress.
I wanted everyone to see you can put the Hooker Blackeart headers right hand passenger side in with the motor installed. Here are a couple of pictures so everyone can see how they clear and bolt right up.
Very nice, definitely making progress.
Those headers look pretty good, they have provisions for the O2 sensors?

These are 304 stainless steel headers that do have the 02 sensor holes.
What are you doing for the accessories? It seems each one of these builds has been different. One guy cut his frame rail to fit the alternator, another changed timing covers... Holley sells a full kit but at a whopping $2200, Roseville provided me a list of parts needed but it doesn't have anything relocated by the looks of it.

I used all the stock accessories from Chrysler on the two 392 Hemis I installed in E Bodies. I did notch the frame only because I read it online. After having the engines installed, I would say it's not 100% necessary, the alternator would have cleared, but it is nice to have a bit of insurance. :dunno:

Hmm. That's the only part I wasn't too keen on. I mean, I just spent a butt load of money to get all new metal installed. I'm not sure I want to start hacking away at it
I assume the crate motors come with the "car" timing cover? is that the one you used?
OK, the 6.4 crate motor did come with the car timing cover. I had Mopar Dave at Roseville supply me the crate motor and all the accessories. He has a good list. I did not want to modify the car so i went with not notching the frame rail and used the alternator suggested by Blake at DIY Hemi.
I put a complete how to with pics up on his website. If you would like i can put it up here. Also you can go to my build under the restorations and "And the journey begins". I put a couple pic there of the Alt mod and how it fits with absolutely no clearance issues.
Thanks, I'll take a look at the thread.
I've only talked with Jon at Roseville, ordered a bunch of sheet metal from them, and bought my crate motor from them. He gave me what is probably the same list he gave you. If the parts on his list are mopar brand OEM parts, I will likely source them from other places to save some money. $800 for an alternator, a couple bolts and idler pulleys feels a bit steep to me if they're just factory replacement OEM type parts.
yes i can pass you the exact dimensions if you want to go this route. if you have access to a lathe and moderate ability to operate it would be easier to just machine one. This is very doable and if you want to go down this road just PM me and we'll exchange emails and i'll send you all the pics and dimensions you'll need.
I messaged you. I could 3d print a metal pulley from any alloy you could imagine, on a laser powder bed machine if I wanted to. :haha:
Awesome build!!!! Keep us updated. :bravo:
I bought the Holley Mid mount compete accessory kit complete with accessories. I'm just about ready to install some of the accessories and here is a picture of there front cover installed.
Is there really any difference between the fit in the engine bay of the 5.7 and the 6.4, or is that all internal?
Thank you
Alan
Differences are all internal.
Thank you!
:thankyou:
