I've always carried a spare resistor and ecu. How does the back melt just sitting in the trunk?

Bullitt-

I've seen this question several times & it happened to my ECU as well.
It seems the material just isn't that stable & over time just disintegrates.

Me too, mine start to melt and ooze down the firewall!
Very irritating....
I brought the subject up some years back and was told someone came up with a method or material to restore them.  That material is there to protect the circuitry from the elements, so you just need to find some sort of reliable epoxy that is inert, to fill it back up and seal it.
I had a spare ECU in my first aid kit I carry in my trunk.  I pulled it out one day and found tools and such from the pouch were stuck in it, as the material softened up and went bad just sitting in the trunk for years!

Yup.....what Bullitt said...that rubbery epoxy they used just wasn't that stable in the long run.

Well at least it's not just me. I should have taken a pic of the mess it made. I dont think the circuitry was damaged but???  Think I could epoxy over it? Or would that do something to heat dissipation if I ever needed to use it?

I had the same thing happen with mine. Lost most of the gunk but it kept on working just fine.

I'm thinking just sealing in what's left might do the trick, maybe something along the line of Flex Seal paste.....

You might be able to seal it. That stuff was for water and vibration. It's probably still doing it's job...but it may continue making a mess for you.

I often thought of doing that too but wondered the same thing as well.
