It seems like two shifter handles were available in 74.  The T handle and the 1970 style round knob.  If you have a 74 Challenger or Barracuda, please post what your car has and any other info you may have on it.(like SPD, trans type)  Maybe we can figure out why some got the T and some got the round knobs.  Early vs late build...using up old stock before production ended?

The 74 data guides on Hamtramck-historical all show the round knob for 74.  Some people swear their car came with a T handle though.  Just trying to see if we can get some better info.

Both the 74 Plymouth and Dodge Data books show and list the round knob.  I've not seen very many original 1974 E-Bodies so I can't say for sure, but I'm thinking you might be right that it was a running change after they used up the left over stock.

And you know we have all those guides here on our site too.   :bigthumb:

My wife has a 74' Cuda and it has the T handle. Hers was built I believe in April so it was one of the last ones in the run. Unfortunately it doesn't have the original engine but it still has a 360.

Problem with trying to decide this is the fact that unless you're the original owner you can't say for sure what shifter the car came with. The shifter is an easy switch out. In fact I'm pretty certain I put a T handle in a 74 that I bought and sold back in the day

:iagree: Mine has the T handle but I'm the fourth owner. Second owner swapped in a 340 and painted it black, originally yellow. Who knows what else he changed. For what it's worth it was an early build. The original owner took possession on Oct 13,73.

I've had a dozen or so 74 B & E bodies and every one of them had the 70 style round knob.

I just checked its 11-73 date on door sticker

Some parts like hood latches have a date code stamped on them.  Do any of the round knob mechanisms have a date stamp?  If they did, that might help sway some non-believers.  Thanks for the info so far.

I mess with these shift mechanisms quite a bit and have not found any date codes. I think the numbers on them are vendor codes, but I'll take another look.

I have a 74 and it has the "T" handle with Auto Trans original to the car.
