Cracking the mystery P5X9

So after Participating in cuda hunter's carslile thread I started thinking. Man I wish the gran coupe interior trim inserts were reproduced.

I also heard that they were nothing more than exterior body side moldings bent to fit the panels.

So I pulled out a few pieces and decided to share.





Notice the ends appear cut and not a smooth molded end, as would indicate the pieces were made from a continuous roll.

Also look at the back of the pieces are consistent with trim found in that time.

My next questions are these...

1. What companies supplied Chrysler with trim products during the 69-71 era?

2. What would you call those metal tabs/clips on the back of the trim? I think those may actually be easier to find as they could be used in other applications.

3. Does anyone think there are other models of Chrysler that had similar trims?

Here is the woodgrain. And yes, it has the little grooves on top or 'ticking' to simulate real wood

It's nice to see many familiar names on this site -- I've been out of things for a while...(too long)

Anyway, to reproduce this trim would be a bit of a venture:

- there is the base molding or extrusion

- then a layer of Mylar to give the edges a chrome color

- then a layer of clear plastic to encase everything.  Note: this usually goes amber with age, hence why the edges tend to look more gold than silver after time

- then the actual red or woodgrain line  (I'm pretty sure that it's not encased in the clear)

The mounting clips are just glued on, and one could make functional ones with some ~22 gauge sheetmetal and a pair of aviation snips...

Awesome, I am in contact with a company that makes trim in a similar size and profile. I'm waiting on them to respond back to me

"Trim-gard" is the company. Check out their 5/8" trim 500-26, offered in many colors with the chrome edges. Coated in vinyl just like originals!

That's my thought! If we can get the trim reproduced and the tabs, I could do a write up or offer reproductions to those whom need them. Kind of a "here is how you do it, but if you want, I'll do it for you"

The red pieces I have are smooth and the wood grain is textured like you said. I think we are on to something!
