Is the grain messed up yet?
Or is it rubbed off with a flat surface?

If grain is still there you can power wash them lightly and dye/paint them.

I've actually fully power washed all the grain off of a set and painted them in a pinch when I couldn't find a set before repro's were readily available.  Still looked better than open metal.

The chalkiness only gets worse. Best off to find some used black ones and dye them or buy new ones.
