Drew (Sleepy Challenger) is a good buddy of mine who is in the Air Force and just got transferred to Destin, FL.  He drove his '70 Challenger 383 from Denver to FLA with no real issues, its also his daily driver.  He had to go to training in Mobile, AL and the engine let go on the way there.  Apparently there was some bad rod knock and so much coolant in the oil it was pushing the dipstick out.  He got some AFA friends to tow strap him to the base where he will be until June 2nd, and he does not have access to a phone for the next several weeks.

Drew's dad has a car hauler and is going to tow the Challenger back to Drew's house so he can pull the 383 and see how bad it is, but since this is his daily he can not afford to have it down for the time it would take to inspect and rebuild his 383.

So we are looking for a decent 383 that is turnkey and ready to drop in by June. Does not have to be anything special, and we are trying to get it as cheap as possible as Drew is in the service and money is really tight.

If anyone knows of a 383, preferably near Destin, FL or that can haul it to his house please respond here or PM me.

J&J auto parts in Starke FL is a muscle car era, Mopar only salvage yard.
He's a very knowledgeable old man, running a business, so probably not the cheapest option, but he's reasonably kind and really knows his stuff.
His name is Jerry.
If you can find his phone number on the internet, it's a land line, not a cell phone, so it might take a few tries to get through to him.

He might have something that would work.  Might even deliver it for a little extra money if there's a way to get it off the truck.
Couldn't hurt to check with him.

I got nothing here & even if I did I'm on the wrong coast.... But having served myself & knowing how tight the cash flow can be for a guy in the military I'll certainly kick in a few $$$ if someone wants to set up a PayPal deal.... Maybe a few others will do the same & we can make it happen.....

A small block won't bolt up to the transmission, but I suppose a 400 or 440 would also work if they happen to show up.

He can rebuild the original 383 later.

He has his original flat hood so a 440 will not work, I'm not sure how high a 400 sits.

Thanks @cataclysm80, I'll do some searching for J&J.

Good idea @1 Wild R/T - Lets see the response and I maybe his wife has a PayPal since Drew is without internet on the base.

Depending on location it's often cheaper to find a running mid 70's Big Chrysler and pirate the 400 out of it.

:iagree:  even Cordoba's came with 400's.
