Looking for a painted gas cap for a 71 Challenger.  I learned recently that 71 caps are unique.  1970 and 1972-74 are different and will not work for me. See pics for examples.

Thanks for the ad!

Is this correct?  Looks like the cap itself has the same casting number?

Here is a reproduction, the mounting flange looks the same although I don't see any casting numbers on the cap.

Mike - Thanks for the links.  The blue one on eBay looks correct but I won't deal with that seller.  The 3404511 number applies to the outer pot metal portion only and is the same 70-74 I believe.

I'm going to hold out for a nice original and will add that to my swap meet shopping list now that I know what to look for.

70-71 depends on if the car was for California or not N95 code on tag. The tangs are different as shown on pictures above, they do not interchange. Notice the width and height  placement of the tang.  That is also assuming the filler neck is original and not changed.  I ran into this when I replaced my filler neck tube on my 70

The 70s style cap could also be found on some early build 71s without California emissions.
I have a 71 painted style cap as shown above and it will not work on my Dec 70 build 71.
It also will not work on my 72. On my son's 71, he installed a Flip top cap and put a Stant locking gas cap under it.
I cannot tell you which style his stock gas cap would be.

Wild, I thought all 71s had the ECS system? I too have an early build 71 car (Sep 70 SPD) with ECS.  The car in question is a late-build (May 71 SPD) with the original fill tube.  I'm of the opinion that I need a pressure vented cap with narrow tangs.  I know for a fact that the 72-74 style caps with the deep seated tangs will not work.

is this what your looking for i have it in stock for sale

Floyd

That looks correct.  As I mentioned in my PM, a friend thinks he may have one and is checking his stash.  I'll let you know if that doesn't pan out.  Thanks for posting.

Floyd, this is Slant6 Challenger Al, I saw your search for a factory twist in painted gas cap for your '71 Challenger. I saw the p/n 3404511 your looking for I checked the one  have avail and it happens to be the same Mopar p/n and the one I have is in very nice condition except that it's a chrome plated cap. If you haven't found one yet and you are still looking I can cut this one loose. Let me know message me and we'll talk. Thanks,   Al
