340 vs 440 Torsion Bar Sizes

B5 Six Pack

 :dunno: I have a '73 Cuda that left the factory with a 340. Now has a 440. Are '73 340 torsion bars the same diameter as those used with 440's in prior years? If not, please give me the diameter of either type bar so that I can determine what's on the car. Thanks for your expertise!

Factory torsion bars are: 1962-72 B Body & 1970-74 E Body are 41.0" in length, and diameters run from .86" .88" .90" .92"

Yes sir, I knew there were 3 different diameters, but that doesn't answer my question. I DO appreciate you taking time to post though.  :bigthumb:

I'm sorry, The answer is no. your original torsion bars were the .90" same as my 73 Rallye, I put the .92 bars out of a 68 GTX in mine after a 440 engine swap.

For a more modern ride you could easily go over 1" diameter

 :ohyeah: Thanks very much guys. This allows me to go see what I've got. The engine swap was done by a prior owner. If he did not upgrade them to at least the .92 bars, I may consider installing some larger Hotchkiss bars in the future.

A related question: How would the weight of my 440-6 with aluminum intake and headers compare to a stock 340-4V with cast iron intake and exhaust manifolds? Really appreciate all sharing their knowledge!

Good info as I am in the same boat as B5 Six Pack.
My Challenger was born with a 318. Have to go check those Torsion Bars.

Anybody got a set of /6 torsion bars for cheap? Drag racing is my #1 priority on my build.

.90 vs .92 not much diff. I agree if you do change then go above 1 inch to see much of an improvement.

Skid Row I may be able to help you out with this. I will check tomorrow. PO used to drag race the car I now have, and I have swapped them out. Don't remember what they are.

My best suggestion is a set of ladder bars with floaters , the T bars will not make a difference when the wheels are in the air !! :bigthumb:

Is that chart accurate? I thought the hemi was the only engine that got the .92 bars.

As was already pointed out, these cars were under sprung from the factory. It was probably due to the tire technology of the time. You can go to a lot larger diameter bar with modern tires. Just make sure you use a high quality shock to get the best ride. That doesn't mean a Monroe or a parts store house brand shock. :alan2cents:
