Hey guys. Getting ready to flush my brake system, and heard that I should use denatured alcohol.

When I search that at my local Canadian Tire, the only thing I get is Methyl Hydrate.

Is this the same thing?  Can I use it and not damage anything.

The plan is to look for leaks in the new lines and then move to Dot 5.

I get Denatured Alchohol at the hardware store in the paint aisle.

I found these reference with a quick google.  Seems like it should work.

Denatured alcohol is Ethanol that has been made poisonous (denatured) through the addition of various adulterants. Methanol (aka Methyl Hydrate) is the most common, but you may also see gasoline, methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, and others.

Methanol, like ethanol, will evaporate completely, making it a good cleaner for that sort of thing. However, it is also fairly toxic, so go easy on it, and wear gloves please.

It's common in Canada for CDA (Completely Denatured Alcohol) to have the Methanol base.
Denatured alcohol, in the US is ethyl alcohol adulterated with methyl to make it toxic to drink (usually 10 to 15%)
The can I have in the garage is Ethanol and has all the nice chemicals in it other than gasoline

Yeah I saw that on google too...I wanted to see if anyone had any real life experience with this stuff.  I just do want it to destroy the seals in the MC or anywhere else.

I want to flush my brake system with it.  While most of the hard lines are new, the soft lines, calipers and wheel cylinders are unchanged.

I want to change to Dot 5 fluid and I read  you need to flush the system before you do that.

DOT 5 may not be a good choice in the long run. Only benefit is it won't hurt your paint. But how many people really spill it on their paint ?

as always there are lots of opinions on this.

I have read lots of threads where DOT5 seems to work great.  So I don't know anymore....

Mr Lee

I dont know anything about the methyl hydrate but i buy denatured alcohol by the gallon at home depot in the paint section. I would think any hardware store or paint store should have it.

I also read the same thing about flushing the system with it when converting to DOT5.
After flushing, I would imagine that you'd want to leave the system open for awhile to let it all evaporate before adding the . 5?
