Need some help .. again.

I started to remove the rear end so I can install trunk pan.

However, I couldn't help but notice that the leaf springs are pointing different.   On the passenger side the leaf appears to sits parallel to car and to front and back mounting points.   But on the left side the leaf is noticeably toed inward and the mounting points seem angled to each other, can't figure this one out unless its normal for 1970.    I made a lot of diagonal measurements fearing frame issues and they were very balanced throughout the car.    I measured from torque box bracket to rear cross member and dead on also.    Everything is still factory spot welded at this point

If I look at my 71 from the back for comparison, both leaf springs appear to be slightly toed inward.      any thoughts ?  thx

Leafs do point inward at the front 2-3 inches less than rear. they are also mount with around 7-9 inches split from the front to rear mount points.

Thank you for this, I will check it out tonight.

Maybe its better to just pull the unit and go from there.

Is there a recommended install process?  mount leaf springs to axle but keep U-bolts loose to install, or toe in leaf spring and tighten down u-bolts before install.

I find it easiest to drop the rear shackles & lower the springs & diff with a jack the undo the front mounts still attached ot the leaf springs , rollout the diff & install again by reversing the proceedure .
Both springs should toe in evenly at the front .

Thanks, that is the way I ended up removing it.

Leaf spring on driver side had fanned out (pic) and were more toed in then passenger.   maybe when I picked up the car from shop they assembled quickly not looking at toe in.

So when I re-install, do I lock u-bolts then mount the unit ?

In searching the subject I also realized that driver side is missing 1 strap, I only have two straps per side at the moment.

Are you sure it's an E Body Dana ? I would check the distance between the perches once it's out.. :dunno:
I've taught you everything you know....but I haven't taught you everything I know....

Original super trac pack Alan, I measured ctr-ctr just to be sure  :bigthumb: (46")

I think I am overthinking this, must have been assembled and installed in a rush just to get the car ready for transport.

There is a lot to learn as usual; left and right specific leaf springs, double leaf straps on one sides etc.

I would snug the U bolts get the springs mounted in place then tighten the U bolts otherwise the spring could be sitting off angle against the diff seat .
