70 Challenger Lover

Hi all,

I'm putting in the brake lines for my 70 Challenger and I ran into a small snag. The car was originally a drum brake car but the previous owner put on factory disc brakes from a later model A body car (so I was told). The brake line routing looked fine but I decided to put new lines in while the whole front end was apart.

I picked up a new and complete kit of stainless lines and they were for a 70 Challenger with factory disc brakes. I found that the line going across the firewall is different from the drum brake version I removed. It's identical in every way except it stops short where it goes under the passenger frame rail. I was wondering if the disc brake line routing went through the opening above the rail where you access the A arm for alignment.

A photo or two would help a lot. The kit also came with a short line for the caliper which also seems different. I'll attach a couple pictures

The original caliper line used copper washers but the new line has an inverted flare end.

In 70-71 two different styles were used "over the frame" and "under the frame" which is referring to the passenger side frame rail. The new line you show will work, but most 70 Challengers I've restored used an under the rail line like your old one.
Power vs Manual brakes has nothing to do with it.

Depending on the calipers you have, that flex hose pictured with the banjo style connection is completely wrong  :alan2cents:

I ran into the same thing when I upgraded my challenger from drums to a power disc kit as well. The line that came in the kit was opposite of what was installed in my car. I ordered the stage one kit from Doctordiff.com and brought this up, and the answer was the same, something along the lines of they could of had either version. DoctorDiff was nice enough to send me the style line that my car had original extra (over the rail) and thats what i used. Id have to dig through my emails for the reason but yea that did seem odd to me as well to have 2 styles of lines for the car.

Okay, that's good information. I assumed it was a disc vs. drum thing. Since it's an early production car, maybe they initially did them under the rail. I thought it looked kinda strange actually and I don't mind going over the rail on the new install. I just didn't want it to look cobbled together.

So if it goes over the rail, does it still go into the mounting tab on the side of the rail near the upper A arm? I assume it does and the flexible line goes from there to the caliper then.

On the banjo fitting for the caliper, is there a particular year they started using them? I examined the caliper and the hole just goes into a cavity so there is no way to use any kind of flare fitting. I don't mind the banjo style but it would help to know the possible year so my auto parts guy can get me new ones.

Yes the hard line still goes to the tab on the frame rail and they never used the banjo style connection on a 70-74 Ebody  :alan2cents:

I was told the disc brake set up came off a later model A body car. Are they even interchangeable? I can always show the flex line to my auto parts guy and let him figure it out. I just figured it would make his life easier if I knew that style of caliper came off a specific year and model of Mopar.

Hope these help.

That looks really nice!  Thanks for sharing. I think I will try going over the top and seeing how it fits. It's either that or find a long line that goes under the rail since my new one is quite a bit shorter.

For further reference, the circled bit is where the over the frame rail line runs through. 71 challenger non power/non hemi drum/drum.

Thanks...I got all the lines in a few days ago and bled the whole system.  Thanks everyone!
