It will always retain the ability in case of an accident, and I can't see any reason why it would move around once installed :clueless:


People have done this, particularly when switching between manual and power steering due to column length issues.
If anyone wants to try that, it's very important to have the pot coupler with the little pin that keeps the coupler shoes from coming out of the coupler.   That will help to keep the shaft from shortening through vibrations and road bumps while driving.
The over the counter spring clamp which holds the lid onto the pot coupler would also be a great thing to add.

On a related topic, I recently switched out my turn signal switch and now the turn signal lever is loose.  Any way to tighten it back up?

Yes, you will need to take the top of the column apart, but it's not hard and should take you about 15 minutes to do it.  Maybe 10, you're pretty good with tools.   ;)  Check out the video at the 28:05 mark to see what you'll be tightening....

Just need to remove the crush can. If you have a good puller, as @Cuda Cody says 10 minutes, personally I can do it in 8.... :rofl:

Does anyone know the length measurements of the shaft on a 74 Challenger. Auto trans, console shift . My shear pins were gone and need to set it in the right area before repairing.

Just watched Cody's vid again  :bradsthumb: and thought it would be cool to see some aftermarket add-on vids. I know Cody is all about OEM looking but I know some folks like modifications better than stock to help with longevity.

For example, some folks like using the 1" race bearing at the bottom of the column because the stock one wears with heat from the exhaust and breaks. I guess it could be a side vid for those interested.

Outdoor furniture uses a round plastic cord to keep tension on the seat maybe that could work .  It would require testing and I do not know diameter of any of it .

Last time I changed the steering box I couldn't get the splines fully engaged and fought it until I got so mad I jumped in the car and beat the end of the shaft with a mallet. Yep the shaft collapsed so pulled out of the car and found that the shaft still had resistance to collapsing so I decided to use the clip that was used back in the day to  make sure the shoes could not come out. I can still measure the alignment hole to see if the shaft has move and it's where I installed it. I had to take a file to the splines to resolve my original problem.

New to me is the two piece shaft, however, I don't believe that is my problem. My shaft seems to be still in tack as one piece. Looking at the above pic, my shaft is sliding in and out of the coupler by about 1/2 inch.
