Even though this started out as rattle can discussion, i thought I'd chime in since the topic shifted a bit. I looked into some rattle can options and I couldn't find any paint that didn't have some people complaining about. There were 1 or two that seemed very good but weren't available. So I asked about some options in this thread

I ended up going with Frank Baldason's engine paints listed in that thread http://www.rogergibsonautorestoration.com/FileStream.aspx?FileID=1
I am getting the engine back hopefully next week and painted next weekend.  I'll post an update when I do. The paint is $65 for a pint.

Fun discussion! Pretty sure Frank Baldason knows the correct paint to use. Anyway, you need more stuff besides just a can of paint. Two coats of urethane black primer underneath the orange. Frank's paint may not need a flattening agent. This is what I used to paint my 1970 383. I'm definitely partial to PPG products. Good luck!

According to the instructions on my can, I just lay it down over the engine. No primer, No hardener, no black coat underneath. The only thing I needed was the reducer. The tricky part was that he was adamant on using PPG shopelite brand reducer, which is hard to find. Apparently PPG Omni appears to be similar/same/replacement/upgrade/downgrade etc depending on who you talked to. The Omni brand is easier to find and should be the same. Not sure there really is a huge difference in reducer, but just in case they put in some additives or what not, that is what I'm going with. It was an extra $35 for a quart. They were out of the pints otherwise I would have saved a few more bucks

Urethane reducer's are all the same, Every brand. There is no difference, only the temperature range's differ.  :alan2cents:

Year one had some mixed up and its real nice.  Color is pretty damn good if not spot on.  Bought 2 cans but only used 1.
