Well, we sprayed some FC7 today.  Base coat , clear coat.  Had a little orange peel.  The boy is VERY jazzed about it.  I am reserving judgement until after I make a dry inspection.  The bottom line is that I don't have a lot of experience, but this is how we change that.  I also don't have the best gun, or a super awesome booth.  But, I have the desire to try.  That is my super power, the desire to try and the ignorance to actually do it.

My grandson and I painted our 74 Rallye Charger this summer. It has mistakes and that's okay as a teenager driving it (my 16 year old grandson)  didn't warrant a perfect show quality paint job costing thousands of $. I went with a middle of the line base and clear, cleaned up bumpers and trim, and new interior. Rebuilding the mechanical parts was more important. New brakes, etc. Theres some dust in the clear coat but nothing that can't be fixed. All done, I'll be into the car maybe $9k. Enjoy it by driving it. It can be redone when wanted. My youngest son and I did a 71 Challenger hardtop for him 16 years ago. He drives it hard. He's talking about redoing it now because he has imperfections in the paint. Now it will be on his money to redo it. We spent about $9k rebuilding it it 2004. Enjoy it.

Orange peel can be cut and buffed out.  There is a first time for everything we do.  Life is full of lessons and the next time you paint, even if its a set of rims or a trunk pan, you will feel more confident pulling the trigger (pun intended).  Keep us updated!

Good on you... please do show us all how it turns out. I'd like to have a go at shooting a single stage coat one of these days!

Way to go, giving it a shot! If you put on enough clear, like 3 coats worth, you should have enough clear to colour sand most of the orange peel off, but be careful you don't sand through, especially on the high crown areas. Sounds like you've got it together if you're averaging 9k per car! I hope the boy appreciates all you're doing for him; you're a good dad!

You may be amazed at how good it will turn out after you sand and buff the car. I have had the same thing with orange peel and was not happy till I got it all buffed. Good luck and can't wait to see more pictures.

Good for you !!!  I had tried painting my 66 Charger, but, biggest problem was orange peel...  Yes, Orange Peel is the number 1 problem with painting.   Heck look at brand new cars and they also have Orange Peel!!   Its just a question of how bad it is, and how willing you are to spend many many hours with cut and buff.

How do you combat it?   First, with a perfectly smooth well sanded primer, high quality paint (flows better and flow is everything) and using a good spray gun with the right pressure and right amount of thinner.    Not easy but, a well experienced painter can do it and have very little Orange Peel.

I gave up and had it painted again by an experienced painter. !!

Good for you !!
