grill restoration questions

I am trying to figure out exactly what color scheme the grill should be.  I am looking at pictures of other people's cars and pictures from old ads as well.  Our grill seems to have a red stripe that I have not seen in other grills.  I am inclined to strip it off and make it plain silver.

Also, can anyone recommend how to clean up the grill slats and repaint them.
