When my 73 challenger was re painted in the 80's the painter painted over the hood and trunk latch plates, trunk light bracket, washer sprayer nozzles and hose, etc.
These kind of things drive me crazy and I am in the process of putting things right.
Going to remove and bead blast the trunk and hood latch mechanisms, and I'm curious what the correct factory finishes were on the parts; were they bare metal? Played?

For example; silver brush painted hood release latch.

Don't blast them.  Remove any paint with paint stripper and then soak them in EvapoRust to remove the oxidation.  I dipped my hood spring, hood release mechanism, latch and safety hook in a black oxide solution from Caswel Plating.  They turned a really nice brown color that closely matches the correct finish.

The trunk light mounting bracket and trunk latch mechanism are silver zinc plated.

Great tips; which kit did you use from them, and how long did you did your bare steel parts to get the soft brown colour?

I just bought their black oxide concentrate. I can't explain why they turned brown instead of black. Maybe some of the original plating was on the surface and affected the color. You'll just have to try it and see how it comes out.

Is the trunk lid latch body colour or zinc plated?
Mine was over sprayed with a crappy respect in the 80's.

Both my 70s appeared to have original paint and both trunk lid catches were body color. The latch assembly was something different but I can't recall. Maybe someone will chime in on the latch.

I am wondering that myself; panted or bare metal?  :dunno:

I think the latch is dipped in something. I'm just not sure what.

I know the front hood catch on the hood is body colour but I'm thinking the back where silver cad; Anlan suggested silver cad for the trunk latch but I wasn't sure if he meant both latches or just the one attached to the car, not the one on the trunk lid.

I use the term catch for the loop on the lid or hood and latch for the mechanism on the car with the moving parts. I thought the catch was body color but the latch is definitely not painted body color. Just not sure what type of chemical plating is used on each.
