Metal coatings (Nuts, bolts, mics)

I was watching some youtube vids on hot and cold blueing of metal parts and was wondering about some of the finishes on various nuts and bolts and other metal pieces. Many of the parts aren't painted but are coated or something. For instance the alt spacers, maybe the motor mounts, etc. Is there any documentation about the various coatings or does anyone have any special techniques they use?

I went the EASTWOOD route years ago to "blacken" some bolts...... don't waste your time or your money.

It is the proper process unlike the Eastwood "faking it" paint route...
Turns out pretty good and is how those bolts would have appeared when they were new.

They also have kits for other types of plating such as yellow cad and the like.

Cool. I've seen this stuff a few years ago but didn't know how well it works. I painted my fender bolts Yellow to match the body paint and the paint cracked. So I'm pretty jaded on painted bolts in general.

For certain fasteners and bare metal hardware I have used POR-15 Metal Ready with good results.  I guess now it is called Metal Prep but probably the same formula.

If I need to "blacken" a bolt or small steel part, I heat the parts to about 500F and then drop them into a can of used motor oil.  They usually come out nicely black and it is a fairly durable coating.  Not concourse eligible but it gets me by.

@gzig5 just changed my oil. Will try the 500⁰ and oil drop for its effect
