Yes apparently so.  It's so trashed though I can't tell if it is factory but I don't know what else it would be since they obviously used the same extension regardless of year; at least through '72.

So it looks like there was some sort of plate there  ?

Burdar

What's the car's SPD?  Only VERY early 72's used the big tube in the trunk like the 71s.  If you have the vapor separator in my picture then you'll just need to make a plate to cover the hole.  Making a plate that looks factory to cover the hole should be pretty easy.  I think the trunk mat covers that area anyway so once that's in place you'll never see it.

Mrbill426

Yes Budar I have exactly what is in your photo so I will need to make a cover.  I am surprised one isn't offered in the aftermarket, unless very few cars were involved in the transition  :dunno:
A friend has a 74 and his trunk extension is solid sheet metal in that area; no cover.  I bought a mat years ago while collection parts for this project and failed to notice it has a cutout for... you guessed it... a pipe.  Pretty sure the description said Cuda 70-74  :pullinghair: .  Back to looking for a mat w/o a cutout  :tired:

Not sure you'll find a mat without the cutout. You're probably better off just making a cover. The easiest thing is to get a flat piece of abs plastic and make a cover. Once the mat is down it will look like it belongs there.

Mrbill426

Yeah I might do that with the plastic and a gasket; I really don't have any kind of metal working equipment.  Still surprised a mat isnt at least offered for the 2 1/2 remaining years of Cudas and I suppose Challengers that had no vent pipes in the trunk.  :dunno:

Thanks!

You're right, the 72-4 Cuda's  seem to be left out of the loop. Same body with different lights and grill and their like the black sheep of the family! A cuda is a cuda to me.

Mrbill426

Yeah it seems so sometimes.  I prefer the "round light" cars myself and am perfectly happy with mine.  :D

I'd make the patch out of metal.  Make it out of cardboard first.  You can use something around the house to help you with the pattern.  A coffee can or pot lid will work for making the round ends.  Once you are happy with the shape, you can transfer it to metal.  A jigsaw with a metal blade will work to cut it out.  I'd paint it white to match the paint in the trunk.  It will be less noticeable that way.

Mrbill426

Sounds like a plan  :bigthumb:

I literally just read this and pulled this out of the trashcan, in my garage. I just re-installed my cuda ECS. I made this out of aluminum. Send me a PM, with your address, and I'll put it in the mail, tomorrow.

Mrbill426

Very cool  :bigthumb:  I will send you a PM...thanks

How's the old addage go, one man's garbage is another man's treasure.  :bigthumb:

Mrbill426

Right you are Sir  :bigthumb:

Now if only the trunk mat I bought some time ago fit correctly life would be good.. but no.  While centered on the floor the cutout where that hole is is off by a ton!  :Thud: WTH??
