Project paint step 1 complete

I just completed painting the rear half of my car. It had me worried as I had some initial gun issues with the primer, but it all got worked out before the color went on I am fairly impressed it came out so well, though there are some minor issues, but for around $1000 I'm stoked. Unfortunatly I couldn't do the whole car in one go, I hope that doesn't bite me later.

I bought a decent gun, built a "paint booth" out of plastic drop clothes and two old canopies, and used a blower with rigged up filters to pressurize the booth. I shot House of Kolor high build primer that was blocked followed by a sealer coat, 3 base coats, and 3 clear coats. Only 1 minor run in the color and a 1 or 2 in the clear.

Note to self: Do not use plastic bags for overspray protection. Paint/primer doesn't stick to it. Had to remove little flakes of primer out of my paint

Even if it's not perfect you can take pride in knowing you did it yourself. It only gets better with practice. A little tip, sand your paint run and give it another coat before you put the clear on. Clear runs are no big deal to get out.

I am going to try my hand at painting the $1,000 69 Dart I just pickedup. I'm nervous, but excited...I've painted some panels and done some finesse work, but not an entire car.

Painting half the car at A time is going to give better results! less overspray, less dust. grounding the car helps because of static electricity. use measuring cups, keep track of your air pressure. I shoot the base at A lower pressure than turn it up to 30PSI for the clear that's my

Absolutely nothing wrong with making your own paint booth and doing it yourself!

@71-440  Sorta, I painted the trunk and engine compartment earlier. Made some mistakes and learned a lot. I worked at a body shop for a few months out of school and learned a few tips.

I already put the clear on. The paint actually went on almost flawless. I was really surprised. The clear went on almost as easy, but the gun hit the ground and interrupted the flow and caused a couple runs. I can get that out. And there is a little bit of pride in doing it. I'm not building a trailer car. The car is as old as I am, and at nearly 50, we both have some battle scars and some sags. LOL.

Awesome. It was a LOT of work but was totally doable. Just do your homework first. Post some pics when your done and along the way

Good advice. I never thought about grounding. THat is a great idea. The dust was under contol this time. When I did the engine compartment and trunk, there was a fair amount of dust. I think having a decent gun helped. I had some cheap ones from SUmmit and either I didn't set them up correctly or they just didn't work all that great. I bought a DeVilbiss gun with multiple tips. I didn't have it set up right for the primer, but after I fixed it, it worked like a champ.

Great job!!   Im going to try to paint my car as well!  I dont have the $$ to run out and pay someone to do it...Im going to do single stage for my first time...I think getting it in color will help me get off my butt and get it on the road!!!
