My first reaction when looking at your picture was 'those don't look right'.

Here's another source for a set -

I doubt you'll find any from a parts vendor to match the ones you have.

I'd be curious though if the shorter ones will still grab - as mentioned this may very well be why someone went with longer ones.

I'd for sure want to use something with a shoulder or washer regardless.

If the center caps are stripped out, helicoils or larger screws may be needed.

If a larger screw is needed go to the next METRIC size (wider) to avoid blowing out the pot metal altogether. Going to the next full STANDARD size may be too much.

How do you know the six you have are original ? Have you owned the car since new ? You could be looking for something someone bought at a hardware store 30 years ago  :dunno:

The MMC Bible of E-Body fasteners shows the correct bolts having a shoulder

That "bible" has been "mistranslated".  The 1970-72 picture is actually the 73-4 bolt and vise versa. The copper shouldered bolts with the "N" stamped into them were what came down the assembly line on rallye wheel cars on 1970-72 cars, the other with the shoulder were what you got when you tried to replace the "N" bolts at your local Chrysler dealer, back in the day.

Have you ever seen bolts with the triple AAA markings in the first picture used ?
I've taught you everything you know....but I haven't taught you everything I know....

Never. Usually a vendor used by Chrysler for bolts or fasteners, etc, was used for multiple parts. Head markings were used by those vendors . A stylized "H" was used by Heiland(sic??), they supplied a lot of carbuertor bolts and water pump bolts, etc. for Chrysler. I'm sure you've seen them Alan. There was a company that used a "G" and an "L" on top of each other on their bolt head, There was AF, a bullseye pattern, a crude "N"(maybe related to the "N" on the copper washered bolt), etc, etc. Those are some off the top of my head. The triple "A" bolt marking I have never seen. Is it referred to or illustrated in that bogus bible?

In the older version of the "bogus bible" :)) that I have, it lists 267 different head markings for bolts found on E Bodies....Not one of them match the AAA markings in the first picture :dunno:

Well hell this indeed is a curious thing for me.  I've seen this style stamped bolt only on mopars.  Never Ford or GM.

These bolts are 15/16, and I'll check all the threads before I restore the center caps this week to ensure the threads are snug and nothings stripped.  I can repair any damaged threads easily enough to use the set of bolts you linked above from eBay or buy them from the RT site.

I'm just baffled that of all the incorrect bolts I removed this style was in two wheels and looked perfectly natural as compared to the replacement bolts that were generic 1/4 20.

On second inspection on that link, I'll pass on those with the E letter, the bolts appear to be about 5/8" in length, and the original calls for 15/16 if my research and measurements are accurate.

Well heck, if we only had a source of e bodies that we could actually check to see what people had.  :))

I can check what is on my 70. I can't swear they would be original, but if they match we might have something. I'll go check tonight and post something this evening.

..... and I only have six and I need 15 more. .....

So that means that every single screw on these center caps for this original 288,000 mile two owner 71 challenger are incorrect for the car? YES

..... I want every single nut and bolt to the original like they are so far except for these missing 13 screws and I want 15 because I need extra just in case lol

what has convinced you that these 6 screws are original & the other 14 are not? - got any pics and/or more details of this Deputy Challenger?  :takealook:

malem2us

I was convinced because the three A's really look cool and they look like they belong to Mopar lol but I did find six of those black ones and they are 5/8 long

malem2us

I have over 4000 photographs of this restoration so you guys will see plenty when I'm done with the car :-)

The two black phosphate bolts in your hand look exactly like the correct originals. Check them for a stamped "N" on the smooth bolt head.

malem2us

The two I held had no stamp I'll check the rest soon

Here is what I had on my 70 challenger. Can't swear they are original, but it's what I got. They seem to be the same as what was labeled 73-74. Which seems to make sense as to what  @198D13 said about the photos being swapped and the 'N' mark on the bolt

malem2us

I'll look closer tomorrow.  The wheels were in their original paint until two weeks ago and there were peculiar colors and splashes on them on the back that was fresh over the top of the original black.  I'm missing a pic with white marks
