Very interesting thread, and nice to see that this group is uncovering more on WHICH bolts were used for early and late.

When I saw those latest pictures with the paint drips, I can't help but think those might be from the "on the line" red paint used on the drum brakes for Rallye wheels.  I've got a set of my original drums that still have drip mark evidence, as they were painted without a lot of finesse.

I don't know where the red drip came from but they were on three of the rims and they are definitely there just after the rims were painted when they were made.
We're not a precision maid rim either there was some slag I took off to make the wheels more presentable that was definitely original from the rims factory welding.  But the extremely hard red drips  caught me off guard.
Now depending on whom would have painted the drums red and when is hard to fathom that it was right there on the line just prior to mounting the wheels.

Does the car have drum brakes all around ? The red drip is likely from when the drums were painted red. :alan2cents:

Yes it has drum brakes all around but they're not the original drums because they're not painted red and I don't know of any vehicle that would have original drums still after 288,000 miles
It's nice to learn new things about this car. For instance I did not know that the factory painted the brake drums red

It's said that car's optioned with an "open" wheel such as the rally or road wheel, got the drums painted red because otherwise they would rust immediately and have a poor appearance while sitting on a dealer's lot.  :dunno:

Hey six of my black bolts have the letter N in them so I'm gonna go with those as the originals I'm gonna hit Lukoil all 20 slots as I'm restoring these so that there's no room for error later.  No I'll go to that RT site and try to find these black bolts with the letter on them

Here's a couple of photos on my 71 of an original rear brake drum paint.

That is the exact color that I found on the back of these rims thank you for sharing that

Glad to share it. My car still has all four of its original brake drums on it. I repainted one with a red that was very close but decided to leave the other 3 alone only for originality.

That's pretty awesome this car has been owned by the same owner since it was under 25k I believe  miles on it.  He then spun the odometer over twice, I believe he did all of his own mechanical work as he was a engineer for Boeing. And I am restoring it for his son and his great grandson
