Shaker cable connection at base ?

My shaker flaps move really easy and my cable from inside moves fairly easy. But I can't seen to get them hooked up without the push/pull cable getting bent when I push it back in. Its almost like its too long, but I suspect I'm not doing it correctly. Anyone have a pic that shows the connection to the lever for the flap cable and interior cable ?
