I used fine line tape to get a nice tape edge then masked off the rest of the chrome ring then scuffed the inside with a red scotch brite pad before paint.

Shoooter

The chrome should only go down on the inside about 1/8"m

Claudia has some accurate pictures there.
Not painted completely black on the inside, just below the ridge line.
I would think no different NOS verses assembly line,... at least in my opinion...
Grainy picture from the ad,.. picture from the brochure...
and an NOS one from the bag it was shipped in.

Shoooter

I've seen them both ways , like your picture and on unrestored ones that are alot higher.

Shoooter

Anyone else want to chime in on what way would be correct? I would like to paint these tomorrow.  I wonder if NOS would be different than assembly line

I think the picture of the NOS one is correct and that's how I've done all of the 71's I've restored. :alan2cents:

I have seen them both ways on restored cars so its hard to say, since the restorer could have used NOS, reproduction, or repainted the way he wanted.
I have never seen proven unrestored ones.
You answered your own question.
If you've seen enough unrestored ones that were painted all the way, that would be the way to do it.

Shoooter

This one the owner said was a unrestored grill one owner car. If it's TRUE I dont know

I've restored countless original grills and have never seen any rings painted that way. :clueless:

This is the correct way.. Over counter NOS ones did not have the black paint all the way to the edge..
