Hi guys,

I'm new to the site. Last month I purchased my childhood dream car, a triple black, matching numbers 1972 Challenger Rallye 340-4. It came with a build sheet that matched up perfect to the data tag and vehicle as it's sits. I bought it from the 3rd owner who said the 2nd owner restored the car (paint, engine, & tranny) It was supposedly a no rust Texas car and kept all of its original sheet metal through the restoration.  The V68 stripe delete code appears on both the data tag and the buildsheet. I'm guessing this option was automatically entered for a black (TX9)car because the Rallye strobe side and hood stripes in 1972 only came in black. I guess Dodge thought that black stripes on black paint wouldn't show well.

My dilemma is that the car currently does not have the color coded Rallye front fender scoops introduced in 1972. Until I talked to the previous owner, I just thought they were removed during the restoration and the holes closed up or fenders replaced. I closely examined  the front fenders and they sure look original to the car and I can't see any sign of the fender scoop mounting holes being there or welded closed.  Does anyone know if the V68 stripe delete option also deleted the scoops? Also, the car does not have body side molding, which someone said automatically deleted the scoops.

Interesting question. Does it look like the holes for body side molding have been filled in?

This Rallye was not optioned with body side molding, but good thought.

Do you have some photos you can share of your car?  I'm not very experienced with 72's, but would love to see some photos of your car.

Sure do! Here they are:

I don't think the black paint automatically deleted the stripes - I think that is how it was ordered
'72s were a different animal, still being JS23s (Challenger Rallye)  :dunno:

for '73 the louvers got their own code "M08" anything on the sheet in the "M" section?
I've been considering a TX9 (black) '73 JH23 (Challenger)/A57 (Rallye package) car with V6X (BLACK - strobe stripes)

You may be correct because the build sheet show it was a customer ordered car. I'm trying to track down the name of the guy in Rice Lake, Wisconsin that restored it. He supposedly bought if from the original owner or was a friend from Texas. He may be able to shed light on this issue.  The window sticker addendum shows the car was delivered and sold at Lone Star Dodge, Dallas Texas.

here's another '72 Rallye w/V68 - unfortunately no pics of the car .....  @Burdar what do you know?

I wish when people speak in codes that they would put behind the code what it means. Just saying.

What's A57 and V6X?

YES ! I questioned that option too! Can't wait to track down the original owner (or family) for some insight on the options that were selected.

Clear glass is not that uncommon on an A/C car, which is why I loathe when people call it A/C glass.

I have not seen a lot of 72 Rallyes. Did they have M08 (Simulated fender scoops) on the tag and/or sheet?

That's a great looking Challenger Vince P

Nice car! I have seen lots of black Challengers with the cool black strobe stripes. I have never seen a factory car with the louvers that did not have the strobe stripes (however I am not confident enough to say that never happened). I am guessing that the stripe delete also deleted the louvers from what I have seen.

Flat black stripes on a black car look amazing.  The stripes look like they are hovering above the paint.  You really have to see them in person...pictures don't do them justice.  Black strobe stripes were definitely available on a black car in 72.

AFAIK, the stripe delete option ONLY deleted the stripes.  You still got the louvers.  I have seen cars with the louvers but no stripes. There could be odd differences between 72 and 73-74 though.  At this time, I still think a stripe delete car should still have the louvers...unless it has side mouldings.

Here is a picture of a 72 Rallye.  This car has side mouldings though.  It's a 318 car.  Notice the correctly painted Rallye tail panel.  This was 72 only. This tail panel looks like it's probably original paint.
