:vipermanhiding: odd 440 top pad stampings, can anyone decode?

Do you know the casting date, and is there an assembly date? Over the counter, or replacement block?  :dunno:

i would usually come to you for these answers.

Cuda Cody

:iagree:  I normally come to you for these hard to answer questions.   :bigthumb:

Just a guess, 1968 Low Compression Marine block?   :notsure:

Skid Row

To my knowledge the  "M" is 1976 date, A starting in 65 no letters I or O?

here's the casting date and another top pad with same size & font  :takepicture:

HP_Cuda

M - 13th number would actually be a 1977 build.

As for the other codes:

LC - low compression
D- ???

The 1-20 looks to be added as a stamp as it doesn't look factory.

This most likely came out of a motorhome.

Weird the casting number 2536430    Chrysler - Dodge - Plymouth    RB    66-72 440 - so how did it get a M code?

D should be the year so it most likely is a 68.  I had a 426 unstamped 1970 Hemi block that was an over the counter block with the same font stampings and it too had 426 on the pad.  I just figured someone added the 426, but now that I see yours and the fonts were the same I'm wondering if it was a warranty or something to do with a dealership?   :dunno:

As a rule of thumb, did all production line Hemi's get WT or TW (Water Test)?

I would say "MOST" HEMI blocks have the "WT" or "TW" stamping  - claiming "ALL" is rarely a wise statement

the Chrysler Marine engine plant was in Marysville, MI (they also assembled the "Max Wedge" & 426 HEMI engines)

the "D" had me stumped, but I believe @Cuda Cody nailed it - a 1968 LH rotation MARINE 440 this is one of a pair of marine 440s that were from the same boat - I'm trying to track down the RH (reverse) rotation block to see what its pad shows.

What would be required to change rotation ? Just the distributor drive gear and the cam I guess ?

There is a crank difference as well.  I remembered this from a Moparts post and looked it up.

QuoteMy Machinist tells a story about a 440 he built years ago. Customer kept having main seal problems, they went over it several times and finally ended up taking a really good look at the crank. Turns out the crank the customer brough him was from a reverse rotation 440 and the little grooves(for lack of a better term) that help keep oil off the rear main were backwards and were forcing oil torwards it. New crank and it was fixed...talk about a nightmare

OK.  A little more detective work to keep your minds active.

These pictures are from a friend's 440.  What can you guys tell me about this one?

if there is a "HP" stamped here  :takealook: there should be a partial VIN on the rear of the block by the oil pressure sending unit
