Since moving to my place about 8 years ago I made it my mission to cover any project I may have so that I don't have to hear from the various number of want-a-be Richard Rawlings out there. This does not stop idiots from asking me while I'm at home or just come home.

Take for instance tonite. Just got home and want to grab some dinner. Get a guy who I know is not from my neighborhood at all and is trolling. He asks if either of my cars in the driveway (under covers) are for sale. I say no, he says he recently sold one and is on the look out for another. I told him they are not for sale I've been looking for a long time and finally have mine.

I tell him good luck and finally he goes on his way. I am starting to really sour on this b.s. and next time I may just use the line - if you want a beating then keep asking me about my vehicles.

It is very clear to me, I need a large garage away (very far) from all the fast and pound crowd.  :pullinghair:

Try to look at it as a compliment..... all the cars you have acquired are desirable.   :ohyeah:    You must be doing something right to be in a situation to have some cool old cars.   :slapme5:  Like you said, time to start planning a new garage!

My patience for having a 10 min conversation after I said no in the first 20 seconds is getting a bit tiring.

The last guy actually knocked on my door and asked, had the same 10 min conversation and asked what they are going for. I told him and he balked and I said go price them out especially if they are not rust buckets.

Folks just want something for nothing.

Most of the time it is a compliment as Cody said, but also beware that they could be possibly staking out your situation for a later theft.  Cameras are a good idea for outside storage, along with motion detector lights.  :alan2cents:

That is exactly the other thing that bothers me.

Yes I have cameras and I live on a closed loop street so I can tell when you are not from the neighborhood.

As we all know, the world as we knew it, and it has changed for the worse. Sometimes, prospective thieves will use this ploy to get a closer look for a potential new acquisition. Last year a Challenger from a Canadian was stolen and to date, has never been seen since. (No Name)    Also the Hemi Cuda that has vanished as well. Wasn't it  the mod top, not sure.

Sounds like a garage/shop is in order. Only thing I keep out side are rollers, and they are in a fenced area. You can never be too cautious anymore.

What a sad commentary on things the way they are. I ALWAYS look around when driving in a new area and sometimes it's interesting what you see. Most of the time if I've actually asked about a car, it's the old "no, it's not for sale. Me and the boys are gonna restore it someday". Drive past again every 5 years and it'll be sitting right where it was, untouched. I do hear you about the Richard Rawlings' of this world and I clump them together with American Pickers as the most likely reason every old clunker is now worth (in the owner's mind) a fortune. Damned if you do and damned if you don't.  :notsure:

Time seems to always be in short supply so I understand what your saying. I live on a busy road and quite often when I have mine out people stop in. Usually to tell me about a " Buddy" that had one and sold it.....just when all I want to do is work on my car!   I get nervous too about thieves casing my house/garage as I have a lot of money in tools /etc tied up in my garage.

Brad, you'd have to bury your car to get people to stop wanting to look at it!  :))

I'm that guy knocking on your door.  But with a bank account with cash in it.  I try not to waste guys time.

I've got like a dozen cars visible from the road and get people stop and talk all the time.  If i'm outside for 5 minutes, someone's gonna stop.  It's just part of the car game.

There are some nice folks and some mean folks.  I've been escorted off properties as well as been given a tour of old cars that I couldn't see from the road.  I never know what i'm gonna get when I stop and ask.

Matter of fact I got asked about selling my 69 Grand Prix tonight.  Gave em a price and roached the tires.    I work 10-12 hour days and it's hard to offer up time to talk.   Sometimes I just give them a card and tell them to email me or text me.  Works pretty good to get out of a long conversation.  And weeds out the jokers.

Just try to be nice cause some of us are not thieves or stupid or broke and truly want to buy your stuff.

Same here with my chal. Seems like whenever I have garage open for any time I have someone stop and ask. Funny though they never ask to buy my 68 Mustang...

In my mind I am ripping them a new one for the interruption but what comes out is a lowly no thank you.

I have had similar situations I dreaded. I was working in DC and my truck was down for repairs so I had to drive the Challenger into DC and park on the street. After work I came out to find a note on the window where a guy wanted to talk to me about the car. I threw it in the trash and went home. The next day after work the same thing happened but the note strengthened to "I really need to talk to you about your car". I was about to do the same thing when I thought would the car be there tomorrow after work if I ignored him. The next day I parked the car at the metro and rode to work on the subway. Just watch the guys who keep coming back.

I'm lucky.  I live at the end of a dead end street in the woods and my cars are covered in the garage.  Not too many people come down my road as they are afraid they will hear banjos.......
Contrary to the opinions of some, I am not dumber than I look.

thankfully only had a couple guys stop by as I'm working on mine in the garage. both lost interest as soon as I told them it's a /6, lol.

Not that I'm on a busy street but for some reason, I don't seem to have that problem.   :dunno:
Drive it like you stole it . . . And they're CHASING you!
