ORiginal engine.

So I need X heads that end in "9" and are casted before this date? How much months before is considered correct?

A cast date any where from one week to 12 weeks earlier would be ideal. Even earlier cast dates (within reason) would be ok.

Not specifically related to this A66 tag discussion;
Paul Goldsmith tested a very early 340 car in a magazine car test in December 1969
The car was a 340 4sp car with a flat hood and  V8 emblems on the fender with no bumble stripe.
The early 340 cars did not have the A66 package components ex.RT hood, and the A66 package was not formally available until early September 1969.
Does any one have an early 340 Challenger (August/early September) that had the A66 code?
:thinking:

Flat hood, fairly early car. Tag is a repro but it is an exact replica of the original tag. (I sent the info to them off the original tag).

My a66 is early. RT hood, but 14" wheels and no metal hood emblems

As we talk about A66, here is a car sold new in Europe, seventh digit is 8.
H code car, 340 automatic.
I never had the chance to see the fender tag, flat hood, RT tips, speedo in km/h.... Nice combo color!

When i was looking for my challenger, this car was for sale, i didn't go take a look at the car it because i was looking for a manual trans...
I must admit I really regret my choice now that i know challengers better  :bricks:
Got a soft spot for A66  :drooling:
Challenger 73' 383ci 4spd ---> SOLD
Challenger 71' 318 904 RT clone ---> Stroker 318/392 Tf 727!

Very cool A66 Challenger with the red interior
Rare rim blow wheel red center cap!
Had to be an early car; with the flat hood
Someone had the sense to order a rallye dash.
I too am a fan of the A66 Challengers.
Here is a pic of mine with a build date of October 6th.
Mine came with the RT hood and DECALS instead of the metal emblems.

I think I also remember pictures you posted elsewhere years back of your flat hood A66 Challenger. Always liked your car.
Your build date is less then 2 weeks earlier then mine.

Yes it was a really neat car with cool options. After you delve into them a bit they are just as interesting as R/T's.

They are really RT cars with a JH code; the RT hood, the HD handling package-same as the RT, and some with the 15" wheels and the standard bumble bee stripe.
I was lucky that mine came with the rallye dash and collapsible spare. The small blocks also handled better with the factory BB torsion bars up front.
Owned a number of RT's over the years, I'm just an A66 "fan".

I'm sure it was a struggle at Dodge to get everyone on the same page to allow the 383 to be installed in a Challenger R/T for '70.

All prior R/T offerings were 440HP or HEMI ONLY -  the drastically quick "fall" of big engine'd muscle car sales lead to the 340 R/T for '71

I agree...  R/Ts carried the big gun....  Allowing a 383 into the R/T family was a hard sell....  Let in a small block?  Good Luck.....

  And 340 in the 71 Challenger R/T was an extra cost option !
