Date Code Question

So with all of the questions on the correct distributor for my '70 440-6 and a mid year change and all it got me thinking about date coded items on the engine vs. SPD date.  Would items such as a distributor be date coded in line with the engine assembly date, or the vehicle SPD date?  Probably asked and answered somewhere and I have not had a chance to actually read all my MMC Detroit reference manuals, but figured I would ask here just for fun
