Help needed on Steering Coupler

Hi Guys, my steering coupler was modified by the previous owner with a nut and bolt going through it and the shaft. I have now restored my column after watching @Cuda Cody great videos! He mentions to not forget the pin at the top near the seal but I was going to weld up the holes in my coupler and do away with the pin or is it important to have in place?? Maybe I should order a new coupler...thoughts??

The little pin is a safety feature to keep the shaft from potentially walking out of the coupler. IMO yes, get another one. And I'm not just saying that because I have a couple of extra ones I could part with. PM me if you decide to replace yours.

Definitely replace the part and install the correct sized safety pin.

It is a roll pin and yes, it is a pain to get in and out. I could see why someone would replaced it with a bolt and nut. It is necessary to keep things from slowly vibrating apart, so I'll pile on the "replace it" side.

To be clear there are 2 pins , the large roll pin at the bottom locking the coupler to the spline & the small pin just under the gasket that stop the shoes from sliding up out of the coupler , the smaller one needs to be there

Yes as others have said, retaining the pin is a must.
The column is collapsible. Held to length with 2 plastic nubs. Without pin it is possible for coupler to separate.
