Should I sell my vert - interest?

As some of you know, I have been chasing a certain '71 Challenger convertible for over 20 years.  Well, now the current owner and I are close to a deal.  In order to close that deal, I would need to sell my convertible quickly.  He doesn't want to wait for a long time for the sale to go through, and I don't blame him.  He has his eye on something else and he doesn't want to miss the opportunity by waiting for me - in other words wants to move his '71 quickly. 

I purchased my car earlier this year and have put a good deal of time/$$ into it already.  My car is a '70 Challenger convertible, 318, console auto, FK5 with black top and interior.  I have the fender tag and build sheet.  Engine is not #s match.  318 has been built and runs great.  No major rust repairs or panel replacement needed.  Interior is in excellent shape.  So far I have replaced the top, well liner, top boot, seat belts, carb, tires, radiator, washer bottle and picked up a bunch of parts including a complete 340, six pack intake (new) T/A chin and trunk spoilers, exhaust parts, trim parts, interior parts etc etc.  I was thinking of asking 43K for it all. 

This is not a for sale ad, but my question is if I put it up for sale at that price, do you feel there will be enough interest to move the car quickly?

Great car!  Obviously the 318 and auto hurt the value, but I would think low $40's would be fair.  If you are looking to sell quickly you may need to lower it to the high $30's. You also are selling a vert at the end of the summer so.....

Nice car. It should draw some interest. Tell us about the other one. Sounds interesting.

The other one is a 71 340 auto car.  Plum crazy with a white top and interior.  All numbers match.  Factory 3.91 rear car.  Has tag and remnants of build sheet.  Has unique lineage to where I grew up as the pace car at a local track.  I don't want to post too much about it out of respect to the current owner's privacy.

I know the 71 you're after...if the guy is being realistic now...and he called you...I think the ball is in your corner....Personally I would go to the bank and borrow the money...close the deal on the 71 before it gets away....then worry about selling the 70 off to pay the loan.

If you have the 71 on a hook, and it gets away....you'll always be ticked at yourself....and when bargaining with the seller...it's better to say I have "cash in hand"....not,...."Oh....just wait a minute, I just have to sell my 70 first"....if you know what I mean.

I do.  But I actually have a loan on my car now, so I can try.

Good luck, that purple 71 is a cool car. Hope you get it. Saw it posted online for sale. I'm local as well, only a few miles away from where that guy lives

If your credit is decent, go with Suntrust bank LIghtstream for a loan.

Super easy.

Get your car asap.  Selling your car superfast = super low return.

BTW, all that T/A, six-pack stuff would be just given away.  Next owner would probably put a 440 in between the fenders.  I'd sell that stuff separately.

70 Challenger Lover

I agree on holding the spare stuff. It would be free essentially to a buyer. You could hold it for your new car or a future project, or sell it for a nice chunk of dough. I'd start around $43k and be willing to drop the price to 38-39 if it allows for a quicker sell and gets you the other car. The loss of a little now would eventually be forgotten once you settle into the car you really want.

Don't do like the guy I bought my 71 Barracuda vert from. He priced it for exactly what he wanted and wouldn't budge an inch. It was like pulling teeth to get him down from 51,900 to 50 flat and he only did that because he took a liking to me. Lucky for him that I really fell in love with the car or I might have considered walking. Price in some wiggle room so that when someone makes you a reasonable offer, you are okay with accepting a bit less and both of you walk away content with the price.

I agree that you are best to finance the new car and sell yours later. There can be a 1000 people who love your car, like the price and want it but only a small fraction will actually have the ability to buy it. Of those who can actually buy it, few will have the guts to pull the trigger quickly. They will want to think about it a while before parting with their money or they will need time to convince their wives...that sort of thing.

Lower your price a bit to move it fast. $5k isn't worth losing a car over that you really want. JMO.

Thanks everyone for the replies.  I had a long discussion with my family last night about it and we decided to keep the car I have and continue with the T/A 'vert project.
