I know it's an obscure one, but maybe somebody is looking for an original part to scan for paint match. This looks like it was removed shortly after vehicle purchase and put in a box.

Would an NOS gas cap come painted or just in primer?

It seems to me that this is the one that originally came on the vehicle in body color and when they switched it to a locking cap they put this one in the box.

Sprayed out my sample of Tamco today, not at all happy with the match. The middle stripe is Tamco, the rest is factory original.

Would the original paint have darkened as it aged/oxidized? I'm not trying to suggest 54 years would make up the difference. Did you spray directly over the original paint?  Have you considered reaching out to Frank Badalson to see he has any recommendations?  Best of luck!

Looking at that cap and your piece, the spray out is definitely off.

It is the underside of a trunk lid so very little exposure to UV rays and I did a light polish on it. I have a couple options - reach out to Tamco and see if they can match it better which would mean sending my sample to Virginia or just go to my usual local paint guy and get PPG base which is much more expensive.
