It's not an option, it's the base transmission I believe...you had to order a four speed or an automatic..

Correct, my vert was built that way. 3 speed on the floor. Something like fewer then 125 in 70'. My car's only claim to fame other than the top.

I had a 3 sp on the floor with my '81 Malibu "Iraqi Taxi".  Got me to school and Florida spring break.  Not a fan for performance or mated to a 340.

I've got a D13 /915 1970 and a D13 /909 1971
Always looking for the 70 date coded one to add to the car. 
That's the only reason I took notice of this stick.

I'm convinced that the D13 3-speed manual was a marketing ploy by Chrysler.

A lot of their advertising pointed out that the 'Cuda was blah-blah dollars less than Camaro, Mustang etc. ... that was with the D13 3-speed as "standard equipment."

At the same time, they figured that practically nobody would want the 3-speed stick and that most everyone would want a 4-speed or automatic in it's place.
That's where they got you for the extra charge for one of the "optional" transmissions. However with the additional charge for the "optional" transmission, the Cuda was no longer blah-blah dollars less than the competition. But that didn't matter any longer because they had you in the showroom.

It still surprises me just how many cars came equipped with the D13 3-speed ... just like it still surprises me just how many of them had column-shift automatics. I wonder just how many people were surprised when the car they ordered came in and they saw it for the first time ... with either a 3-speed stick or a column-shift auto?? Buyer: "What the hell?? I ordered an automatic but I didn't want it on the column!!" Dealer: "Sorry Mr. Smith, but you forgot to check the box for the C16 Center Console ... so therefore it's on the column."  :Thud:

3 speed saved you $200. Also the first thing the insurance company asked was if the car was a 4 speed, if it was your insurance premiums went way up. So if you ordered the car with a 3 speed and then swapped in a 4 speed you were way ahead $$$$.
