Right from the start, originality is not a factor.
I see 24 and 24F batteries, will either fit?

It looks like the only difference is whether the posts are near the fender or engine side?

The original negative cable won't reach on a 24F... 24 is correct... 24F will work with a longer cable....  The "F" is for Ford, they had the reversed posts...

Correct , F battery posts are reversed. That's the only difference

Katfish

Thx,

So is this standard, or the F?

Perfect, F was $25 cheaper and Walmart had a special going and it was $53 out the door!

If battery originality is not a factor, I'd go with a larger Group 27 battery. Mine has 810 CCA and costs about what a Group 24 costs. My car is trying to be all original but I'm not going to pay $300 for a OEM looking battery. 1970 Challenger, fits great, terminals on the engine side. I always buy the largest CCA battery that will fit.  :alan2cents:

What's a lightweight yet economical battery that's got some oomph?   I would like to find a lightweight battery with sufficient cranking amps, but don't want to spend $350

AGM's (Absorbent Glass Mat) are expensive no doubt about it. But they live longer since they can recover faster and offer more cycles of discharge to charge. Warranties are usually better as well.

Odyssey brand is probably one of the most lightweight I've ran into.

High Cranking Amp batteries have more plates yet thinner plates.
Typically, Not as ideal in hotter usage outside temps.

Also notice incorrect negative cable. You want the original cable with the radiator brace ground connection and not a separate terminal from the cable. Just another place to get a poor connection and corrosion.
Especially since oe appearance does not seem to be the most important thing ( modern a/c compressor etc... )get the biggest battery that properly fits the box with the highest CCA rating. If your alternator ever dies on you when you are away from town, you will have a lot more reserve driving range before you get stuck.
