My dimmer switch stopped working so I did the bypass so the dash lights stay on at full brightness (which is still not very bright) whenever the headlights are on.

When I inspected the switch, the spring that goes around the circumference of the base of the switch was no longer attached. It is not possible to reattach it without taking the switch apart.  If I try and take the switch apart it looks like I will ruin it.  What is the purpose of that spring?

RUNCHARGER

It's resistance is what causes the lights to dim or go brighter. When you rotate the knob it effectively changes the length of that coiled spring which is what changes the resistance.
