I am nearly through installing a new ignition switch and while I am in there I decided to yank out my key buzzer which really did not work anyway. I am a bit undecided if I want to just leave it out or put a new one in (assuming I can find one). Originality is not of concern here.

I vaguely remember having one of these in an old car, a Camaro I think and if I recollect correctly...it was annoying. What do you all think. Keep it or shelf it.

One of the first things I did when I got my car was remove it. Always found them annoying. I've removed many over the years.

Funny story: A while back I restored a guys car and when I took the column apart I found that switch was broken...So talking with the customer, telling him what it was for and that I would have to hunt down a good used switch...His answer was clear..."just get rid of it...I don't want some stupid buzzer...  Fast forward about a year and a half, The restoration is finished, he's out enjoying the car but it has a couple of odd electrical gremlins so he has an electrical wizard look at it...
This guy tells him that "I'm an idiot" because when I restored the column I didn't even know that it needed a switch because the switch was missing... :looney: :looney: ...and now I'm the bad guy because this "expert" has to "redo" my shoddy work.... :haha: :haha: :haha: :haha:

Since then, regardless of what the customer wants, I make sure there is a good switch in the column, 'cause like Murray just said, you can always unplug the buzzer

I'll make the counterpoint, for sake of originality, if the contact switch is functional, reinstall it while you are in the column. You can always simply disconnect the buzzer lead at the horn relay if it becomes an annoyance. I restore all original warning buzzers to operational as designed, it's part of the experience of being around these old cars IMO.

I used to flip them out. Nowadays though, the more original stuff works in an old car the more it feels like it is not a Mickey Mouse resto with shortcuts taken so I'd leave it in. It's like leaving bulbs out for the signal indicators.

Is it any different than the whining sound of a Chrysler starter?
Yes, it's Kind of annoying, but part of the character too.

BTW my buzzer works on my Challenger

I leave the switch but pull the buzzer.  It's annoying as hell to be working inside the interior and need the key in the ignition and and the door open and  :pullinghair: :alan2cents:have the buzzer constantly going off because I have the door open.

Does the factory set up still buzz with the door open when the key is in the ON position?  That's silly.

I actually just added one to my new build using an aftermarket buzzer kit since the factory buzzer was long gone.  I wired it up to buzz only when the driver's door is open and the key is OFF, or when the exterior lights are on and the key is OFF.

It's been a while since I pulled the buzzer but to the best of my recollection, yes it buzzed with the ignition on and the door open but I could be wrong.

I love the whine of the original starters, their sound was unique.

......and YES to keeping the switch

Nothing says 70's e-body like the sound of that buzzer and the unburnt hydrocarbons!

I am going to need a good switch and I thought part of the issue is they don't make the correct one for a 70? Is there somewhere I can find a new or good used switch for a 70 challenger?
