Ok, first this may be 'Captain Obvious' to many of you, but over many years I've replaced at least two washer pumps for a broken nipple/barb on the pump.  Now, I do have a very old NOS pump on the shelf, but wondered if it was practical to repair.

At least in the short term, the answer is 'yes'. (pictures attached)  I originally was going to get some 5mm stainless tubing, but then while at Menards (local big box hardware for those not in the mid-west), found a 3/16" ID x 3/16" ID Nylon Hose Barb.

The easy steps:

  • Cut the hose barb into two pieces and chamfer the cut
  • Remove the barb closest to the cut end
  • Bore out the broken nipple of the pump. I did this by hand in 1/16" increments with a drill bit in a die handle.
  • After a test fit and bench trial to ensure no impeller impact, put a bit of RTV sealant on the hose barb and fit it back snugly into the pump - avoid pushing it in too deep.
  • Sit back and feel the satisfaction of saving a 30 year old pump and remount the assembly in your e-body

@benguin That's really cool.  Great save!  Would you mind posting a picture of the end of the barrel?  Is it a McCord or a Delman  pump?  Also, it's an NOS unit and not assembly line unit?

I went a little nuts and started work on restoring an original pump.  Pretty fun!  Just deciding if I will go with yellow cad or bare steel finish.

@Floyd, that is a fantastic rebuild!

My pumps are both McCord C-4169.  The pump that was repaired has to be from 1978-1980 and was an over the counter replacement.  It is identical to the NOS pump that has a dealer parts ship tag on the package dated 5/02/88 to me.

The only difference I can see between the two is that the newer one has an additional number cast into the base (second picture) of 44037 with a sideways A over the 0 (not sure if that will show in the pic). The older pump has simply a '1' there.

The original pump when I got the car is long since gone, and was likely flat black, as was most of the fenderwell/firewall area.  But I seem to recall that under that paint it was gold cad.  Not sure if that was the original, but that was 1977, back when we weren't quite as particular. :-)

Keep us posted on your rebuild, and let me know if I can add anything else.
