I just checked the pricing at Brewers and there is $1,000 difference between the 18 and a 23 spline rebuilt.
Is the 18 that really much better difference for the cost?

Cuda Cody

How much HP are you planning to put behind it?

Chryco Psycho

They built the 18 spline fr a reason , the 23 spline 833 is one of the strongest trans built ever , Mopar took it one step further with the 18

I think the price difference has something to do with availability of parts. Brewers finding an 18 spline core is much harder. :alan2cents:

@Dan Brewer has two cents he can add ?
I've taught you everything you know....but I haven't taught you everything I know....

I see all the comments can make sense for the pricing.
On HP, less than 400 would guess.

once it's installed you will not be able to tell the difference, as stated above a 23 spline is VERY strong. You'd have to flog it pretty hard to break it. So it comes down to bragging rights (or to the flippers, resale value). Is is worth the extra money to be able to say (truthfully) "it's got an18 spline". If you're just fixing yourself a nice cruiser to enjoy, go with the 23 spline and spend the extra $1000 bucks on a Vintage Air system, so you're better half will go with you!  Sorry, just my worthless .02

A few years ago I was at Carlisle on a Thursday. I told the guy at Brewers that I just walked by an 18 spline trans a couple of rows over. He asked me where it was specifically and took off running towards it. Didnt even ask what the price was on it....

kathyscuda

theres a good chance you wont break either one.
go with the cheaper 23

RUNCHARGER

The 23 spline is stronger than anything GM put behind their 427's.

I've heard the 18 spline run louder, but don't know from personal experience.

I believe the 18 spline transmissions are geared differently and are a little quicker if your looking for maximum performance.

Chryco Psycho

there are at least 5 different sets of gears ratios for the 23 spline

jimynick

Strange to think that the thinking is that 18 splines are stronger than 23 splines in a transmission, when every axle manufacturer is exactly the opposite.
In the immortal words of Jimmy Scott- "pace yourself!"

RUNCHARGER

Yes apparently the size is larger so that compensates for the splines. The big differences are inside with larger bushed gears.

I had my 23 spline totally rebuilt, then before installing it, put in a Tremec instead. Now the 23 sits on basement floor.  :headbang:
