Wanting to get my engine assembly finished up and came across an issue I am not familiar with.  The balancer I have has a ridge, or step, where it slides onto the crankshaft.  It is hard to make out in the photos, but you can see it next to the keyway in the 2nd picture.

Of course it will not slide on the crankshaft as it does not have that "step" in it.  Wondering if the crankshaft is incorrect, or if I have the wrong balancer?

Thanks

The backside looks like a 440-6 harmonic balancer.  The ridge looks correct.  Are you using the OEM 440 cast iron crankshaft?  I suspect this balancer is designed only for that (externally balanced) crank shaft.  The  following is purportedly an ebay image of the 440 High Performance crankshaft harmonic balancer, #3512 017.  Maybe post an image of the crankshaft front side you're attempting to affix this to.

Mr Cuda

I beleive all balancers have the intial portion relieved, prior to the snug fit portion.
I often use a small block crank bolt to get a big block balancer pulled down to where a regular crank bolt can finish the job.

That looks original. It does slide on tightly. Does it not start on?

Thanks all - yes it "starts" on, just seems odd, and I did not build the engine so not sure the crank is correct.  Will try to run it on and see where it goes, thanks for the info!

I will try to post a pic of the crank
