The dipstick on my 440 goes into the side of the sump on the oil pan. I've never seen this before. It seems weird to me. Is this normal or has someone messed with it. It looks to me like the dipstick should go in through the block. See second picture.

Yep. Not stock on a car. Will need a new dipstick kit and oil pan.
Is it the original engine ?

Since this is an E-body site and he didn't say anything different, assumed it was a car.

Yep: Factory setup.

It looks like the PO used some other dipstick and cut it to fit. There are no markings on it. I want to get the right one. Are all 440 dipsticks the same or does this setup require a different one?
Also the tube has a nut(?) at the base where it goes into the fitting in the oil pan. Is this a thread in tube? Where can I get one?

This is a stock pan and dipstick for a truck. You need to get a car pan, pickup and dipstick

I'd have to dig a pan out but I'm pretty sure the pan has a threaded fitting brazed to the sheetmetal pan side. The just a normal right angle brass fitting screws into it.
Dipstick is longer than a car dipstick. What I usually do is find the 1 litre low level at an oil change and file a mark across the dipstick and then add another litre and file the full mark across.
I really like big block trucks of this era. Here is my old factory 440 shorty.

For his 440 Truck ?
I don't think so !
the dipstick level is the same in all 440s at about  1-2" under tha oil pan rail where the pan bolts on .

@RUNCHARGER Yes the right angle fitting threads into the side of the pan but it's not tight. Perhaps I'll have to remove it and put thread tape or pipe dope on it. But I still need the correct dipstick and tube. I'm not confident the one on there is correct. It doesn't bolt on to anything higher up. Where the tab is to bolt it doesn't line up with anything.
