I am trying to understand the function of the plastic box on my 71 440 distributor. I am going to start the engine for the first time, and would like to understand how to connect to the idle solenoid. Thank you

Sorry to just now see this and that no one reached out, but here is what I've obtained.

The original assembly line plastic enclosure on the distributor was indeed black. All NOS replacements were natural, as is the case with your unit.

However, the tag information is incorrect for your application.

For the 1971 model year 440+6, manual or automatic, the assembly line tag should have Chrysler number 3438577, and the Prestolite number should be IBS-4019B.

I can supply you with the correct tag with the appropriate date code as well.
