A-833 removal

I'm going to remove the A-833 out of my 73 challenger as it is leaking, plus I want to go through it. I'm waiting on my shop manual to arrive; I've removed lots of torqueflites in my day, but no A-833's.
I will be dropping the tranny with the car on my 2 post lift.
Any tips or tricks anyone wants to pass on before I dive into it would be appreciated!

If you're doing it on a lift, be sure that you've got a transmission jack or that you are young, fit and strong enough to pull it out and not drop it on your feet. It's heavy- about 80-90lbs I think and it's a bit clumsy, so be careful! To pull it is straight forward. Disconnect the Z bar and linkage, drop the driveshaft, plug the tailshaft or bag it, remove the shifter and linkage, remove the trans crossmember, remove the lower inspection plate and unbolt the trans from the bell housing. It should pull straight out; if you let it sag, you may get bound in the clutch disc or input shaft bushing that's in the rear of the crank. Grunt, sweat and swear a bit and it'll be on the ground- hopefully in not too fast a fashion- see my initial statement. Have fun and take consolation that I'll be doing the same soon enough!  :cheers:

I do have a transmission removal jack, as well as a tripod screw to take the weight of the rear of the engine

Do not do it by yourself. Have at least one friend helping. One person to pull and one to steady.

If you have a lift and a trans jack, you are golden. This was the first trans I ever installed and removed, about a year ago. My car was on jack stands, me and a buddy bench presses that sucker into place. When you pull it, tape a spray paint cap to the tail so it doesn't leak.

I do them myself without a trans jack and I'm 62, you'll have no problem using a jack.

If you can get an old output portion on the trans before the U joint. that is what I use.

So a couple of stupid questions; what is the Z bar?
Do I have to remove the shift linkage rods?
And finally, it doesn't look real obvious how to remove the pistol grip shifter off of the top of the tranny; is there a trick to it that I'm missing?

Z bar is the pivot shaft that traverses engine and drain rail.
Rear of engine will need to be supported because motor mounts are up front. I suggest something spanning to inner lips of front fenders. Yes it should be removed because arm to throw out bearing has to be removed. Also good time to inspect nylon washers the ball pivots ride in for wear. Cheap and easy replacement when you are in there.
Shifter unbolts from side of trans and lifts out from top. Take it out with boot still on it. Remove 4 screws to free boot.
Life is to be viewed thru the windshield. Not rear view mirror.

Some pictures showing them z bar and the mounting point on top of the driver side front frame rail.  The z bar has little spring clips and plastic washers on both ends, so take lots of pics of how it's assembled before you start pulling it apart.

one final comment.....Last time I did this the trans was stuck to the bell housing/engine.  Nothing I did would release the trans so I could back it out. The final thing that work was I was able to rattle a small gap from the bell housing and then carefully .... and I mean carefully slid a large screw driver blade between trans and bell and with a hammer tapped on it until the trans popped backwards. crow bar did not work.

  You can remove the whole shifter from the side of the trans by removing the 2 bolts , but if you want to remove the handle you need to slide a feeler guage in beside the handle with penetrating oil & pull the handle out of the shifter .
Yes the shift rods have to be removed as they go above the trans crossmember
