I am restoring my 1971 Cuda and back in 1990 I Installed a 3.55 sure grip center section out of a AAR since the Cuda came with a 4.56 when I bought it. Now that I am putting the car back to original with a 3.23 sure grip I don't know the best way to proceed. Here are my questions.
1) AM I better off selling the center section to someone who needs a correct date code for a AAR or T/A car and start looking for a correctly date coded 1971 center section ? I know this is tough to answer but I guess what I'm really asking is "Is this thing more valuable as a complete unit ?"
2) Is this a cone type or clutch type posi-traction unit ? It works perfectly but I would like to rebuild it if I use what I have, I have read that the cone type aren't rebuildable.
This unit is in great condition and currently soaking in Evapo-Rust to better see the paint inspection marks that are already partially visible.

It works great and is quiet? Well, you know what you have, I would most likely clean it and slam it back in, otherwise sell it as is and hunt down a correct date code case and put all new parts in it. Otherwise prepare to be disappointed. JMO. I'm not big fan of 3.55 but they will only rev your engine 10% faster than a 3.23 and probably are a nice addition to a short stroke 340.

That's just it... If I keep it, I would re-build it and get rid of all the original components and add a new 3.23 gear and upgrade to a true trac posi unit....all I would use is the "489" housing. To me that seems like a waste of a good quiet complete drop in unit.

RUNCHARGER

Yup: If that is how you feel I think you should sell it. It should bring a good buck and you have run it so you can confidently sell it. No point in rebuilding an incorrectly date coded center with what you are doing there.

It's a cone, not rebuildable.... If you won't use it as is then sell it to someone who will....Personally I'm with Sheldon, save your money... Bolt it in & go..... You won't get enough to justify selling it.... :alan2cents:

Personally would sell it as is & build a 742 or a 489 with a spacer not a crush sleeve & install the better 4 pinion clutch type sure grip

IMO use it and make it a Miscellaneous Odd Parts Arranged Radically.  MOPAR.  My car is not a high dollar car so I did what I wanted to .

My car is coded for a 489 3.23 S/G with the 7290 yoke so that's what I want to build. I would probably trade the complete unit for the right bare date coded 489 center section, my SPD is 430 so I guess a January-March 1971 date code would work for me, then I can build it with a upgraded Detroit Truetrac and 3.23 gears.

If it were me, id find a 3.23 suregrip in good condition and put it in and then sell the old one.    Two years ago i found a used 3.23 suregrip a guy was selling on craigslist for $300.   Hey as far as originality, i have NEVER seen a judge at a car show, crawl underneath to see your differentials case !!!    I took out my cars original 2.76 open (its sitting in the garage..as nobody wants it.. and put the entire new 3rd member in.   Works great.

Another option assuming your 3.55 is in good shape, is adjust the engine speed with the tires !!    3.55 isnt all that bad with 15 inch wheels, or if you want lower rpms you can put on new 16's or 17's.   in My case even the 3.23 is a little high for highway cruising as i still have the 14 inch tire/wheel combo.   Another option to give you your cake and eat it too...is put in a gearvendors overdrive..

I have searched out the majority of the missing date coded parts like the correct Mounds rd intake and exhaust manifolds, 4972S carb, dual point distributor, Alternator, 340 block, idle solenoid, "late" valve covers, "450" steel wheels with Polyglas 15" tires and 044 leaf springs so it would just be nice to find the right date code 489 case, I'm not doing this for car show judging I just want the car back to as original as can be. I'll look for a while and see what pop's up, I've seemed to locate everything else in the past year or so.

I know this has a 71 ring gear but the date code on the case confuses me.

I've had a few people send me pics of a 2 digit date code and I can't figure them out either
