Since all of the alternator brackets on my car were from a C body, I was swapping them out today for the correct brackets.  I have a '70 Challenger w/ a 383 and A/C.  When I was putting it all back together, the alternator won't fit properly as it's a later square back and it hits the block.  Has anyone else had the square backs not fit on a big block?  So I figured I would get a proper round back, but was curious what the stocks amps were.  78?

I've been using these ones from Summit Racing...They're like 95A and look identical to the originals :alan2cents:

if it is spaced correctly it should not hit , is the forward ear on the alt in front of the bracket ?

Pretty sure both the square back and round backs will fit on there the same.  Do you have the correct brackets?

The car had C body brackets on it when I bought it, so I got one of the new bracket kits (it's a 440 kit but I got the extra bracket for a 383).  Yes, I have the forward ear in front of the bracket.  I even put in washers as extra spacers and the alternator still was hitting the head.

Here are some pics.  I have not tightened most of the bolts yet.  Notice in the pic where it shows the position of the tension bolt on the alternator.  It's almost at the outer most point and I can only move it about 3mm before the back of the alternator hits the head.

On your alternator ...isn't there a 5/16 hole for the small half inch adjuster bolt further down from the one you're using, thus swinging the alternator further up and out ?

:iagree:  Yup, I think you have the adjustment arm on the wrong hole.

And one more question - anyone the correct length for the A/C & Alt belts?  I have seen approx. 60" and approx. 44".
