BIGSHCLUNK

The Brown truck brought me more stuff today!  :veryexcited:

BIGSHCLUNK

I started on the intake removal after I finished the stuck on piece of VC gasket.

I cracked all bolts on the heads first... nothing felt like they snapped, some hardly torqued IMO.

I started removal on the Lt side - started in the back. I removed this by hand....

1 - Is this a typical screw for the rear of the intake?

2- Is there another screw behind the block off plate in the center/rear of the intake?

BIGSHCLUNK

Next I pulled all the bolts on the left side.

Do these look like hardware store lock washers?  reuse or replace ? Bolts are grade 8

BIGSHCLUNK

Front bolts not finger loose but almost...

RUNCHARGER

I put roll pins in the end walls. The purpose is to keep the end gaskets from moving around. You can re-use the bolts no problem. I believe on 66 intakes the rear of the manifold had a tunnel for the middle bolt. I think the factory went to roll pins in 67 but I'm not sure.
I actually use grade 5 bolts on the sides. I would like the bolts to fail before pulling threads out of aluminum heads. If you are finding loose bolts I bet you will find the old gaskets were leaking which is a good thing, you wouldn't want to do this for nothing.

 :iagree:
You can reuse the bolts , looks like it needed attn if the bolts are almost loose

BIGSHCLUNK

I should have it off (intake) tonite.... then we can really see what's goin on

BIGSHCLUNK

k the intake is officially off!  All the gaskets stuck to the intake - nothing on the block or heads. Allright HEMI guru's what am I looking for??

Ports look nice & clean so why are the plugs fouled , lack of driving I bet

I see oil residue in the ports & on the backs of valves....  It looks like #5 might be clean....  Shoot photos looking straight down the ports & take photos of the intake with the gaskets still attached....  Is there oil residue in the intake too?   Probably not which would indicate the oil came from the intake gaskets.. Depending on the cam there may be some oil due to reversion...

See if you can get a shot down the ports so the head stud penetrations are visible....

BIGSHCLUNK

I figured you guys would want more pics.....  So here you go! And I will get more if need be

BIGSHCLUNK

Here's the intake

to me it looks like the gaskets were doing there job , I don't see any obvious areas where the gaskets wer enot sealed up

RUNCHARGER

Hmm: I agree the gaskets were sealing. The ports are a bit black and like Wild says that valve is coated. I looked at it again with the initial shots. It might be fine, the ports look black on the straight on shots but the view from the front makes them look almost normal. I think after a few hard passes it wouldn't look too bad. My guess is it's been on choke a lot lately or it's idling dirty. I welcome other opinions though, I'm not always the sharpest tack in the box.

The gaskets do "look" better than I expected but I wonder if it's just a material that just doesn't soak up oil & discolor.... I do see evidence of oil in the ports...  & it does appear to extend into the intake manifold which isn't surprising since I'm betting this thing doesn't idle like Granny's car....

I would clean it up, use my Three Bond on both sides of the gaskets & Ultra Grey on the end rails..... Bolt it back together &  :burnout:
